France or Quebec?

I was curious if Quebec is a lot like France, with the sidewalk cafe's, great bakeries, open air markets etc. or more like everywhere else in Canada, just a different language. I'm thinking about visiting one or the other this summer, so maybe if Quebec is similar to France, I could save some money by just driving there. I would love your input! Thanks!

I haven't been through rural Quebec, but Montreal and Quebec City both have a lot of what you're looking for, especially in their Old Quarters. If your budget is tight, then definitely consider it. Just remember that those who come from there are not "French" but Quebecois.

On the other hand, Quebec doesn't have the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, or the Cote d'azure and on and on and on. I've been to France twice now, and believe it's a must see for any worldwide traveller, so if do try to get there someday.

if you don't speak french, then i suggest going to france because it's more touristic or atleast the montreal area in quebec.
I haven't been to france but i saw almost everyplace in quebec and it is pretty cool for the most part. The things you do will depend of the area you're in.

I have said for a long time that the old town in Quebec city is a poor man's trip to Europe. They speak French, but the people in the service industry all speak English as well. The culture is clearly derived from France, but they are proud of their own history. The walled part of the city is very much like being in an old Eurpean town. If that is what you are looking for make sure to stay in that part of town. The Frontenac is a great place to stay if you are looking for atmosphere and if it is in your budget.

I went for Christmas a few years back and it was wonderful. We took a walking tour of the city. The boardwalk at the top of the cliff was covered in snow and you could buy maple syrup that was poured over snow and you rolled up on tounge depressors. We ate at both French and Italian places that were wonderful.

They are both unique, I don't see one as a substitute for the other, but obviously if money is a factor it can be a little cheaper to go to Quebec than France.

If I had the opportunity and the where-withall, I would hit France first. Simply because, as you said, you can always drive to Quebec anytime. As Highthief pointed out, both are unique, and have their must see attractions. I've been to both, but it France was back in '78. I still can remember the sites, smells and sounds of Paris, and think that it should be on your list.

all parts of Quebec are fascinating, but you will probably enjoy the urban experience more. The restaurants and nightlife are fantastic. If you are in Quebec City, you have to try the creperie beside the Chateau Frontenac, and the Aux Ancient Canadien restaurant just up the street.

I had smoked pickeral there.

Quebec is to France what Newfoundland is to Ireland. If you want the real deal, go see the original. You can't compare Paris with Quebec City, not in a million years.

The more rural areas of Quebec can be somewhat ... backwards, even openly hostile to some people. Don't go driving through with Ontario plates on your vehicle.
