Is my dog going blind?
 

Today I noticed that my dogs eyes were cloudy. I know hes been having trouble running into things occassionally, and the other night he had to follow my whistle a few times to get back to the back porch, but I attributed this to him being preoccupied and rambunctious. Is he going blind? Is there anything I can do about it?

why don't you take the dog to the vet, it obviously has some kind of condition that has probably happened to other dogs and that the vet is therefore probably aware of. i mean if your eyes were cloudy and you couldn't see shit in front of you what would you do, i hope not post on a message board, you'd go to the doctor (then again there ARE people who post shit like, "help! I'm bleeding from the anus! what do I do?"). so yeah, i have no idea, but the vet probably does. :icare:

Yeah, an internet forum is not going to be as good as a vet. Make an appointment right away.

It sounds like cataracts to me. They can be fixed but it is expensive. Good luck!

I second cataracts. A vet visit is in order. To add to what's been said, dealing with the issue involves corrective surgery; part of the lenses in your dog's eyes have begun to turn opaque and will have to be removed.

I have an appointment for next week.

My mom said he may also have an infection, which would make sense, since he got covered in swamp mud/feces(?) about a week ago after getting in a fight with some mysterious critter.

My 11 year old Newfie has some haze in her eyes, as well. The vet told me that it is similar to the middle age vision problems that humans have and would affect her near range vision. It doesn't seem to affect her at all, just doesn't look right when you see her. Talk to your vet.

Cataracts. My dog developed them as she aged. Dogs adapt and the vet can help. Dont give up on your puppy just yet. :)

Miss Mango, im wondering what breed of dog you have. We had a Havaniece for 13 years, and they are notorious for developing severe cataracts. After she was around 10 she was completely blind, but she functioned fairly normally with the exception of thinking the fridge was a family friend whenever he came over. She got really bad later on, but it most likely had nothing to do with her eye sight. Dont worry about it.

it could also be glaucoma or any number of other things. You should have taken the dog to the vet for checking after he fought the swamp thing. You should definitely take him now.

I looked more closely yesterday, and took him to my mom to look at him too. He has an occular abrassion (cut on his eye). I got some antibiotic ointment that I have to put in his eye once a day.

And as mentioned above, we have a vet appointment after Xmas.

Intercranial pressure had caused his eye to swell shut and by the time I had him looked at it (the day after christmas) had cracked his skull from the inside. There was nothing that could be done but put him down. He fought all attempts to do so, defying medical science. Hes gone now. Ive cried, and will probably do so again and again. He was such a good friend and companion. Im at a loss to say more.
