Vaccums

Given that this is Tilted Living, and vaccuming is an essential part of Living (at least if you have carpet and don't like it grey), I need some recommendations for buying a vaccum. My parents have always had an Oreck and my in-laws have a Dyson- I like the Oreck but don't like the bags or the price, and the Dyson is a giant pain in the ass (sucking literally in more than one way).

I'm looking to spend up to $200 max. I don't have pets, so it'd just be for normal vaccuming around the house. I'm not all anal about a HEPA filter. I'd prefer it to be bagless (and yeah, I know to empty the canister outside so the dust doesn't just go back on the carpet  ).

Does anyone have any good brands they like?

I have a small dirt devil (it's a red upright) that I really like - it's about 3 years old and has good sucking power... it fits in a closet - and takes upno room - and it's really light weight so i can move it around easily.

the drawback to it doesn't have attachments so for cleaning the cobwebs and baseboards it doesn't' work but my swiffer dust mop is fine for that.

I think I paid about 50 bucks for it at target and it's worth every penny... and it's got no bags... just a container that gets emptied.

Well, see, Mal, I've got one that sounds like that- it's small and yellow and I bought it at Target. It's the perfect size for an RV or something, but what I'm looking to upgrade to really is one with a bigger sucking part on it- so it doesn't take as long to vaccum. Plus the canister on the one I have is smaller so I have to empty it more frequently, and I really would like to have attachments on one vaccum- right now I have a smaller Oreck handheld thingee with all the attachments, which works great but is a pain in the ASS to lug around and I always manage to knock something over when I lug it out of the closet.

But I will look into the Dirt Devil brand after that recommendation. Thanks again fearless leader! :)

Dirt Devil has always been my baby but Hoover works well too, the ultimate is a Kirby but who can afford that?!

Wow we have a new Dyson and I love it, so I am surprised to hear you don't like them.

I would say STAY AWAY from anything by Eureka, I had a couple of those in the past and they were both pieces of crap.

My Bissell Magic Vac does anything and everything I need it to on the vacuum front. I wouldn't recommend it if you've got a lot of carpeting, but if you only have a small area to cover this thing is just about perfect.

I would highly reccomend the Oreck. I picked up mine on Ebay for less than $200. I use the commercial vac and have hardwood floors and carpet.

Brewmaniac 12-13-2006 11:26 AM

Have had Oreck, works well but with dogs they wore out and clogged up, then tried hoover windtunnel which burned out in six months, took it back to best buy, the sales guy said the Dyson would never clog. He was right, have had the Dyson two and half years and it's by far the best vac we ever had.

Wow mal, in the first sentence, substitute "girlfriend" for "small dirt devil"

and

23 for 3

And you're describing the ideal woman!!

What a sick sob, funny as hell, really made me laugh!

little_tippler 12-14-2006 06:41 AM

I love my dyson also, it's great and no bags involved.

All I know is my vacuum sucks...

Sage 12-14-2006 06:55 PM

To further clarify- I live in an apartment, so it'd be mostly for carpeting. I don't like dysons because they are hugenormous and clunky as hell and HEAVY. I can tell they were designed by a man.

Thanks for the suggestions- keem em coming!

Vaccum? I googled it and there was nothing. I mostly sweep, although I've always liked my mighty mite.
Eureka?

I dunno how they work but Roombas are cool, just set it and forget it. That is until the robots rebel and take over the earth.

The guys on the Tivo Community Board obsess about this kind of stuff all the time. Try the thread Hmmm ...Dyson's new challenger? (you might have to log in to get there). The Hoover WindTunnel is well-liked, along with the Dyson and the Fusion.

Dyson have recently released some smaller vacuums.

My wife is a small lady, and she manages to get the whole house done with ours (we take turns, before you all crucify me).

Take a look at the cylinder D08 Telescope.

Roombas work as advertised. They are every bit as cool as they look, but louder than you might think.

Just empty them after every vacuuming.

Nimetic 12-27-2006 12:50 AM

Vacuums yes?
