2006, A Year In Review...

Good, bad, and/or wacky. TFP related, on-line, and/or in real life...

For me I quit my first job, had my first job interviews, gained my first real job (that I actually had to interview for/etc). I decided to follow my heart and return to web developing which meant swapping jobs again. My boyfriend and I moved in together, weve got our first bills, etc.

What are some of the moments of 2006 that are most memorable for you?

I became single again, bought my first house, applied for an MFA in fine Arts (still waiting to hear if I got in), made a few new friends, met some famous artists, visited Barcelona for the first time, and had my first TFP meet-up (also the first one overseas). A pretty good year I'm thinking! Now all I need is a raise in January and I'm set

I was in Lebanon with Abaya at the beginning of the year, which was great. She moved in with me for the summer, woot. Unfortunately war was going on back home during that time, which was distressing. After the summer, we decided to get married and move together to Iceland for her research! So we got married, and now we're doing the paperwork for Iceland.

Birth of my son is the top one.
Hitting $1M in revenue in mid-Nov. is pretty high up there.

Getting fired by a formerly good client was the low point, but it happens.

A year is usually divided up into seasons, for me. Maybe that's because I'm still a student, and semesters order my life conveniently. Of course, that's about to end (for the first time in my 27 years), so maybe that will no longer apply.

In winter, I went to the Middle East for the first time, which is something I never imagined myself doing before I met ktspktsp. It was indeed a great start to the year, and I definitely intend on making that trip many, many more times in my life. I added the dual-degree of Demography to my PhD work, and then had the most academically-demanding semester yet (spring). I worked out assiduously for the first half of the year, then became a sluggard for the last half.

During the summer, I discovered that I was more uncomfortable getting out of my car in the American urban ghetto than I was living out of a tent in a rural African village with no modern amenities. So I made myself comfortable. I got to know Philly inside and out, and spent a lot of time hanging out with immigrant store-owners in the ghetto for my RA job. I also got to spend every night with ktspktsp for two months straight, and during that time we evolved into a state of being ready for marriage. I had a 5 week engagement (fall) and planned a damned impressive wedding day in that time, if I may say so myself. Of course, one result of all that is that I'm now about to embark on taking anti-depressants for the first time in my life, since my nerves are so frazzled that I don't really recognize myself at times.

I am hoping to begin 2007 in a more stable state of mind, which will be essential since I will be taking my comprehensive exams in January, and then we are moving to another country together. I want to be as supportive of possible of my husband who is taking this huge risk with me, and I want to do a kick-ass job on my research in the coming year.

It's hard for me to view January as the start of the year. For me, the beginning of the year has always been September, when school starts, and probably will always be so. And this year, September was my New Year as well: after working for a bad employer for several months, I was able to secure a new position as a nanny for a family here in town, and I was able to go back to school.

I love where I am at right now, and wonder how I got through the 9 months of 2006 before it--guess I owe my awesome SO a lot for getting me through it!

February-hired as a permanent part-timer after the Xmas season(I thought I was just to be there 90 days!)
June-won the excellence award at an artshow-my very first award-for my digital art.
August-4 days in KC-sheer heaven. And it reinforced my goals, both personally and in art.
September-Finalist for the second time in an artshow, telling me I'm not just a hit-or-miss fluke.
October-My poster takes off like a rocket and gets featured in a gallery.
November-Boss lady mentions I'm in the running for department manager. My long-lusted-after camera becomes a reality.
Bad points of 06? Hardly any! Ok, so we were near bankruptcy(averted) and my car needed major repairs. No one was sick, the only death in the family was an ex-brother-in-law. I have a roof over my head, two fantastic kids and friends who genuinely love me and support me in so many ways....
2006 has been (so far) a damned good year.

Ah, what a year it has been. Started by ending a relationship with someone I should've only been friends with, just to jump into another that wasn't right for me. Dumb move. Found TFP for the first time. Reconnected with a few friends that I thought I'd never even see again. Went to Europe and had the time of my life. Was in one of my best friend's weddings. Bought a house. Found a full-time, permanent job that I love. And finally, things fell into place and I am dating the man I should have been dating this whole time. The end of this year has been very good to me.

Downs:
Mom broke her arm, and Dad has a hernia which is going to be taken care of come January. I hate seeing my parents in pain.
Ups:
I was promoted to Front Manager - no pay raise, but it'll make my resume look better.
I have been ROCKING school, acing the tests and papers like a Goddess of English. The Most Feared Professor of the institution has praised my academic writing skills. I'm happy, and I'm motivated.
Our team finally 'won' a certain competition. Okay, we placed second, but it was good enough to earn us the privilege of hosting the competition this spring. I've been looking forward to doing this for over five years.
I've started exercising after eight years of only running after buses. It feels great to work my body.
Impersonal Ups:
Finland won the Eurovision Song Contest! Unbelievable! I thought I'd never live to see that. I was this close to tears...
It seems like Swedish Christer Fuglesang is finally going to go into space. Once again, I thought I'd never live to see that. It's been a running joke the last decade or so that he'll never go into space.

It has been a good year:
I am up for promotion at work which is good because I really love what I do.
I have been with my boyfriend for a year now and it just can't be any better.
I began living completely on my own, in my own apartment.

I have been really lucky this year.

2006 wasn't good and it wasn't bad. It just was. I have learned alot about myself this year and I am working on fixing as much as I can. I have a long way to go with this.

My son started preschool. He didn't take to it very well in the beginning, but he is doing much better now. No more crying, but he still is not eating lunch.

My daughter is growing up into a beautiful young lady with an attitude. We are constantly working things out, but the lines of communication are wide open.

My husband and I are finally starting to communicate. He actually tells me how he feels about some things now. Something I didn't think would ever happen. I hope to keep this going and grow old with him.

Started the year by traveling internationally by myself for the first time and haven't stopped since. Done it five times this year to three different continents (besides North America) while holding done a full time job that has no vacation time.
Went hunting for the first time and enjoyed it.
Quit my job in St. Louis and started a new job in Chicago and am already enjoying it much more (the job AND the city).
Got to spend every holiday away from family for the first time, at work no less.
Became a lot less of a pussy when it comes to women, though it's still not natural. That's what I get for starting ridiculously late in dating.
Became out of shape due to spraining my ankle during said training and later just getting lazy.

The goal for next year is just to enjoy every facet of my life, which is something I did not succeed in last year.

Still have the Job from June, they are paying me lots of money.

Started kinda seeing a girl [hostility removed].

Before, I've sent several PM's... now I'm making public note of it, because I don't want anyone thinking this is something we find even remotely acceptable.

You do not get to be hostile to other members, regardless of the reason- knowing them from outside the TFP is not an exception. Stop it.

My girlfriend and I moved in together. I'm 29 and have been living on my own for nearly a decade, and this is the first time I've lived with another person since moving out of my parents' house.

I got another promotion at work.

I took in a stray cat that I found. She's very sweet and beautiful.

I started 2006 recently dumped, back living with my parents, and starting my last semester of culinary school. School was a blast, I learned more than I could have imagined and by April I was sad to leave.
Summer was kinda boring, I was sidelined from work with a wicked cut on my forearm that required plastic surgery to fix, I spent from May to July unable to use my left hand because of the damage to my muscle.
September was a lot better, I met an amazing girl, found a huge apartment in a perfect loaction that was way cheaper than I was ready to pay.
And now, just before christmas, I wrote my interprovincial chef's exam, and passed. There's now talk of a promotion for me at work, and possibly my own restaurant/catering business run with the help of the street youths that I teach cooking to. Having a place like that is a dream that I've been too afraid to dream. Either way, 2007 is lookin pretty good.

Like many others, 2006 was a year of ups and downs for me.

* February: I went to Switzerland, visiting Zürich and skiing at Jakobshorn, in Davos, Swiss Alps. Awesome place! I had dinner at an excellent, 500-year-old restaurant in old town Zürich. I saw the really cool Technorama, the Swiss Science Museum. I am itching to visit northern Europe.
* March: I went to Chicago and had a blast with a lot of really cool TFPers!
* June: My tiger tabby cat succumbed to FIP and I had to sign an euthanasia authorization to end her suffering. She is & will always be missed, even though I only had her for 10 months.
* June: I bought a house. I actually enjoy living in it!
* July: I lost my job, laid off along with everyone else at the office I worked. It was a cool job and I keep in touch with many of my now ex-coworkers.
* August: I was paid a 9-week severance even though I'd only worked 14 months there. This helped me survive the layoff without going into the red.
* September: I got a new job 5 weeks later, at first as a contract employee.
* October: I was hired as a full-time employee three weeks later. They offered me a salary at my contract rate, representing a 30% raise over my previous full-time job, plus 100% of health premiums and 5 weeks vacation+holiday.
* October: I got a cool housemate who actually pays me rent + utilities. The mortgage payment is hardly a burden anymore.
* October: I got a new cat, he's awesome, in excellent health, and gets along well with my older cat.
* November: I bought a new car. First one I've ever enjoyed driving!
* December: My brother might be moving to Denver! Woot! I might actually have family around here!

2007, bring it on.
