Feral Cat Bites, Share your stories!

I had gone home for the long weekend to watch my parent's house and as I was getting ready to leave to go back to Lubbock I was trying to get the cats inside (three of them) and the feral cat Sweetie who we've been feeding and trying to domesticate got inside on mistake and saw me and started flipping out and climbing everything. She got on this extra high shelf and jumped and out of instinct I reached up and caught her. BIG mistake.
*CHOMP*
Right into my hand. Plus scratch marks all over. Hurt very bad.
Well I chased her outside, went and cleaned my hand, got the rest of the cats in and hit the road.
Got into the LBK at around 10:20 p.m. Told James what happened he said to go to the doctor and have it looked at.
It was really swollen and tender the entire drive, about 4 and half hours.
So after unloading my car I took myself to Covenant ER and they gave me a prescription, and a Tetnus shot. They said cats don't carry rabies, so I didn't need to get those
Oh, to point out. The lady said the meds would knock me out in roughly 30 minutes. So she'd be right back with my shot so I could go.
25 minutes...........later. I'm pretty much knodding off, they come in and give it to me. OUCH! It helped wake me up so I could drive back. It's still pretty sore now.
It seems to be recovering nicely, so luckily I don't believe antibiotics are necessary currently, we'll see how things go the next couple days.
I consider myself lucky for not needing the rounds of rabies shots.

Share your stories of bites, scratches, or other injuries caused by pets!

I don't play with feral cats. Cats can and do carry rabies, albeit it's not common in the states. I live in a very rural area and they're as bad as rats as far as I'm concerned. Several inhabit an abandoned barn about a quarter mile away and occasionally stray to my place. The ones that do come around are fairly vicious if cornered (my dogs have had several opportunities to find this out) and offer nothing of value save for marking their territory around my house. Luckily my dogs are usually able to take care of them and I just have to get rid of the remains.

I was on a home visit last year and I saw a couple of kids hitting a cat with a stick. She was hurt pretty bad by the time I saw what they were doing. I went to pick her up so that I could take her to the vet to try to get her fixed up. I knew when I did I was being stupid, but I didn't want to leave her there so the kids could go back to torturing her as soon as my back was turned. Of course she bit me, I carried her all the way back to my van with her fang stuck in my finger. She bit all the way through the fingernail in my right index finger.

She died, she was already hurt pretty bad before the kids got a hold of her, and I was able to get her tested for rabbies, which she did not have. The vet did tell me that there had been no cases of rabies in a cat in Oklahoma in a very long time. I don't recall exactly how long, but I wanted to be safe since she was already dead anyway.

I had to get a tetnus shot, but that was it. Tetnus shots HURT. For two days my arm ached worse than my finger. Actually even with the puncture going in so deep my finger never really hurt as much as the scratch marks that I got on my arm.

Feral cats deserve a life, too

Well, I am trying to rescue some feral cats from our local school and yes, I got bitten. But, they allow me to feed them and such and do not attack unless you make a move to grab them. They are NOT VICIOUS only trying to protect themselves. They will usually cower in fear and NOT attack. I made a mistake and moved the hiding box of a particularly anxious fellow. This same cat has not bothered me when I put food and water in his cage barehanded. These cats are being spayed/neutered, vaccinated and relocated (to shelters). It is expensive but worth it to me. Hopefully far from people like you guys.

The person who allows their dogs to tear them apart while alive should be ashamed of themselves. What kind of person are you? Is this supposed to be funny or cute?

I would not let my dogs tear apart any living creature. Not cats, dogs, frogs, or lizards. It is cruel and just wrong. Cats do help get rid of rodents, and some areas are actually IMPORTING feral cat colonies to do just that. Even more importantly, they are not hurting anyone. (Which can't be said for you, unfortunately)

The children who were beating the cat with a stick should be beaten with a stick themselves. I cannot believe that their parents would tolerate this sort of cruel and sick behavior. You know that people who abuse animals grow up to abuse people.... you should seriously report them to FCS.

BTW the person who tried to save the cat is a good egg!!!

Feral cats deserve a chance to live as well as any other creature. The only reason they are feral in the first place is that some moron humans did not spay and neuter their pets, and then dumped their cats by the side of the road for someone else to deal with. This is the result of ignorant humans, not anything the cats themselves have done. Hooray for the superior species!

I have no idea where some of you people live or who you are but I hope to God there aren't very many like you. I wish for you to be reincarnated as a feral cat and end up in your own yard. Treat other creatures the way you want to be treated.

I was bitten by a feral cat when I was in 8th grade. We cleaned the puncture wound up, but my mom didn't take me to the doctor for a few days. My hand got progressively more swollen, and a red area spread rapidly after a day or two. When she finally took me to the regular doctor (not the ER), he immediately took me down the hallway to a hand specialist who admitted me to the hospital overnight. I received IV antibiotics (with a PICC line) for TWO WEEKS, and was told I was close to losing my hand to the infection.

I also had to receive rabies shots (the first round) because the cat was a stray (CATS DO CARRY RABIES, THAT'S WHY THEY GET VACCINATED FOR IT). My parents were able to trap the cat, who was then sent to be euthanized and have its head cut off for rabies testing - once it was confirmed to not have rabies, I didn't have to receive the rest of the three-week cycle of rabies shots.

Ugh.

So, yes, take your antibiotics if you get bitten by a cat. Just in case.
