How to erase points off your driver's license?

Hey all,
I've got a speeding ticket and paid double just so that they can take 5 miles off and make it 55 (I'm sure I wasn't speeding anyway:(().
But I still have the 2 points. How do I erase them?
What should I do?
I herad of taking driving classes. What is that and where can I find them? What are they called exactly and how do I apply for them? How much do they cost? I'm clueless.
Thanks in advance.

yeah i think in the states you can go to driving school to get rid of pts, but you must do it before the court date. always try to fight it cuz if you don't insurance will increase

Driver Improvement Program
If you accumulate 12 to 14 points on your driving record in two years, the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) will mail you a Notice of Scheduled Suspension. When you receive it, you have some choices. You can ask for a hearing or turn in your license for the suspension period. Or you can enroll in a Driver Improvement Program.

This $100 program is offered as an alternative to a 30-day suspension. Up to three points will be removed from your driving record if you successfully complete the program.

How to Clear Points from Your Record
They say time heals all wounds, and time can also erase points from your driving record. Well, not entirely―your point violations will always show up on your permanent driver history. But the accumulate point totals on your current driver status will go down the longer you go without another ticket. For each year you complete violation-free, three points will be deducted from your total.

You can also reduce your point total by attending traffic school. You can enroll in a Driver Improvement Program every two years to subtract three points from your license. Every five years, you can remove two points from your total by completing a Defensive Driving Course.

In CA, you make arrangements with the court to attend a court-approved traffic school. Make sure you get this approved and recorded with your court first, or it's completely wasted time (and money, they'll of *course* charge you an extra fee, on top of what the traffic school will cost). You usually have a couple months to do that, and then a bit more time afterwards to submit the paperwork proving you did it.

Just call the court and tell them your ticket number, and ask about getting the traffic points removed (and document everything they tell you, and the date, time, and the name of the person who gave you this info! In case you do what you're told, and then someone else contradicts the first, and *you* get in trouble for it...

Great advice!!!! Thanks, Aro, Mal, and Sultana!
Mal, I went to your link and enrolled. Sultana, I'm gonig to call the court nad let htem know I enrolled in a traffic school. Thanks so much.

Sultana 10-10-2006 09:11 AM

Hundove, best be sure the traffic school you enrolled in is recognized/approved by the court, or it's a complete waste of time. They have to approve it, and they usually have a list.

maleficent 10-10-2006 09:14 AM

you also want to make sure that it will indeed reduce the points.. NJ I thought you could only go to traffic school if your liscence was nearing suspension.. 2 points isn't even close to suspension...

Sultana 10-10-2006 12:41 PM

In CA you can take traffic school every 18 months (for a specific ticket, not just in general to constantly reduce points).

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Violation...mprovement.htm
Point violation program
The MVC Driver Improvement Program is offered in lieu of a 30-day suspension for drivers who accumulate 12 to 14 points in more than two years. Information about the program is included in the Notice of Scheduled Suspension that you receive in the mail. Up to three points will be removed from your driving record if you successfully complete the program. The fee for the program is $100.

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Violations/penalties.htm
Driving is a privilege, not a right. If you break traffic laws, your driving privileges could be suspended or revoked resulting in fines and even imprisonment. The seriousness of your violations - and resulting penalties - are tracked by MVC using a point system.

If you are convicted of a moving violation, MVC will penalize you by adding points to your driving record. You will only get points on your record for moving violations - points are not assessed for parking and other violations. A table is provided for more information on the number of points earned for specific violations.

How do points affect you?
If you get six or more points within three years on your current driving record, you will be assessed a surcharge

If you get 12 or more points on your current driving record, your license will be suspended. You will receive a notice of scheduled suspension by mail
Getting points on your license may also increase your insurance rates. Contact your insurance agent for details

How can I get rid of points on my record?
Although MVC keeps a permanent record of all the points you've earned, it is possible to earn point deductions by remaining violation and suspension-free for one year or by taking qualified driving courses approved by MVC.

Deduction Points Restrictions
One year with no violations or suspensions
-3
Year begins on date of violation or most recent restoration

Defensive Driving Program
-2
May be used to subtract points once every five years

Driver Improvement Program
-3
May be used to subtract points once every two years

Probationary Driver Program
-3

what about Canada? Though I've got no points on... I was just wondering?

sorry for the thread-jack...

dawnoffawn 10-10-2006 05:42 PM

hey all,
thanks for the suggestion. In the traffic school that is in the link Mal gave me, it is a 6 hour program in which you can take off up to 2 points and also reduce your insurance.
Does anyone know what exactly do we do in those six hours? What is the program detail of this class?I really want to know what I'm going to ahead of time.
Sultana, I have to call the court and make sure that they approve of it. Thx.
I hope they do!!! Otherwise, i'm not sure they'll refund me!!
thx all.
best wishes

maleficent 10-11-2006 03:09 AM

the course i took in mass, we had about 4 hours of classroom instruction, with a test we had to pass, then about 2 hours behind a simulated driver which we were also scored on and had to pass.

Call the school and ASK Them what youahve to do - every state is going to be different

dawnoffawn 10-11-2006 07:23 AM

I just called the court to see what traffic schools are approved by them and they were surprised I asked them and they told me that they do not dela with points. They only deal with fines. They told me that DMV is in charge of points.
Is this true?
Should I contact the DMV?
Thx

maleficent 10-11-2006 07:40 AM

if the dmv is in charge of points.. then they'd be the one to call...

Jinn 03-10-2011 10:45 AM

Zeet: The laws and regulations for your area are going to differ from the original posters' (in 2006) and as such we can't give precise advice. Generally speaking, though, when you go to court for a moving violation you will meet with the district attorney (DA) or assistant DA. Based on your driving history, their docket and willingness to prosecute, and extenuating factors, they may offer you a reduced sentence ("defective headlight", "careless driving", "obstructed view") in exchange for you pleading guilty to the lesser sentence.

If it is entirely a mail-in ticket, then some municipalities will reduce the sentence if the fee is paid in a certain amount of time, usually the first 15 or 20 days.

-- Disclaimer, not a lawyer, will be different case-by-case and depending on local and state laws.

The_Jazz 03-10-2011 02:48 PM

zeet, if you want a better answer than what Jinn gave you, you need to give us more details. Like where, circumstances, your age, record, etc.

Otherwise, Jinn's pretty much hit all the high points.
