Idaho in Jan??

Anyone from Idaho here? Especially Couer d'Alene? Ktspktsp and I are going to my mom's timeshare condo there for New Year's, and we're wondering what the heck to do in the middle of winter. Other than skiing on Silver Mountain, of course (yay!). We'll be there 4 days.

Yeah, the main thing you can do in Idaho in January (including Coeur d'Alene) is freeze your ass off.

I recommend indoor sports. Sex, say. Oh, and drinking! You can drink like crazy!

Don't worry, we plan to have plenty of sex, and drinking too. The place does lack a hot tub, which is too bad, but otherwise I think it's cozy. I am ALL ABOUT the skiing, however!

I've been seeing this indoor water park advertised on the regional news channel in these parts called Raptor Reef that's just north of Coeur d'Alene. I have no idea if that's anything you'd be into, though. I imagine that there is a lot of stuff indoors in that area, though, because of the winter.

You would think so, but besides tons of bars there isn't anything else. Except box stores and strip malls (thanks, California!)

When I lived there we'd do alot of snow related stuff of course, but that gets old. Mostly we just stayed in the house, or on sunny days go downtown. Downtown is still nice, but I suppose it's like just any other old downtown. Nothin special.

The indoor water park is pretty cool, it's actually an addition to the bowling alley there.

It's called Triple Play.


Anyways, uh, I'd suggest going out to dinner at the Dockside, it's in the lobby of the coeur d'alene resort. THey have some good food there.


other than that, I spend most my "fun" time in post falls or in spokane.

How far is it to Post Falls or Spokane, and what's to do there?

This is Coeur d'Alene you're talking about. They're well-known for their classic car show every June.

But I did find this website for you to poke around on: http://www.coeurdalene.org/ so you can see what's going on while you're there.

And Spokane is about half an hour from Coeur d'Alene. They have a really nice mall there where everything is connected via skybridge so you never have to step outside, and it was just remodeled a few years ago. Usually I go to Spokane in the summer, though, so most of my recommendations of what to see or do are kind of useless.

^^^ And Post Falls is between Cd'A and Spokane. Unless things have changed a great deal, you can see all that PF has to offer in short order. Spokane is a big city by Washington standards and there will be a number of things you can do there.

If you have good roads and time for a day trip, you might enjoy Pullman, home of Wazoo and all that you would look for in a college town.

I lived in Cd'A for a few years in my early 20's. I did *winter* there and don't wish to experience another.

There is an ongoing joke here in Corvallis regarding the nightlife here. When people complain that there isn't enough of it, we say, "At least you aren't in Pullman." I once said to a friend of mine that the highlight of Pullman is the Arby's, and after he visited, he agreed. I should note I've been there several times, don't recommend doing it in winter, though the Palouse around Pullman is GORGEOUS in summertime, when the grains are long and wavy and silky-green.

Oddly, we're the only two colleges in the Pac-10 that are in small towns, yet Oregon State has the lowest crime rate out of any of them--even compared to Pullman--and a lower number of sexual assaults. Hmmm...

Oh, if you're driving over there, you may be tempted to pass through a town called Ritzville instead of stopping. Ritzville is the Adams county seat, and has a very lovely cafe called the Circle T Inn downtown that serves a nice breakfast. Additionally, there is a museum at the former train depot that chronicles the life and times of the town of Ritzville, including when it was covered in about half a foot to a foot of ash after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. I don't think anyone in my family would contemplate a trip to Spokane without a stop in Ritzville. It's an easy on/off the freeway, and very picturesque.
