Photos - Painted Desert, Arizona
To get from the South rim or the Grand Canyon to the North Rim, I had to cross part of the Painted Desert which has quite a few interesting rock formations.
I was on the road about 5:00AM and happened to spot this rock formation just as it was lit up by the sunrise. ![]() Northern Arizona is mostly parks, forests and Indian reservations that were very sparsely settled. The driving was mostly thru open landscape with rock formations like this, near Vermillion Cliffs ![]() The landscape looks like this a little closer to Vermillion Cliffs ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() That picture blows my mind. Great set, you make me want to go out there to see the area.

Your travels are doing a great job of making me homesick, dogzilla - glad to see others who are able to find the beauty in this empty land.

Thanks. I spent more hours on the road than I thought I was going to. When I crossed northern Arizona, it was a lot of open space, but was never boring. There was usually some interesting scenery along the way that kept me from being bored, and I could have easily added another day or two to the trip if I stopped and looked around at each of the interesting places I saw. I see now why there's a magazine called Arizona Highways.
