Ft. Myers, FL
The wife and I and our 7 month old daughter are flying to Ft. Myers, FL with some other family members next weekend, and I was wondering if anyone here could inform us of things to do there?
We are looking for things to do OTHER than sit on the beach all day, since we don't want to take our daughter down to the beach during the day... We are already planning on visiting the Ford and Edison summer home(s), but are there any sites of interest in or near Ft. Myers? Thanks! |

I highly recommend Corkscrew Swamp
http://www.corkscrew.audubon.org It's an excellent nature preserve with a boardwalk through the swamp. It's a short drive South and East of Ft. Myers. |

If you want to spend some time on the beach, you could get a collapsible sun tent; they can fold up pretty small, then you don't have to worry about the sunscreen as much.
(I don't know Fort Meyers.)

Its been years since i've been there - Fort Meyers I don't recall having a lot to do... you're a pretty quick drive across the causeway to Sanibel and captiva islands - Captiva used to have this place ( i say used to because I don't know how it faired with the hurricanes last year) called South Seas Plantation... it was a beautiful place for brunch... and just wandering around..
Not sure if it was Fort Meyers or the area around it- -there was also this really cheesey but entertaining alligator farm... where you could see gators up close...

Man, I wish I had seen this earlier. I used to live here and was down there this past week, so any news is going to be old news, now. You probably found out the hard way that Ft. Myers Beach had a large boat race and a small airshow before the races. The beaches were a bit crowded, too, with 40,000 people there to watch the races and the jets.
