Could I have worms? :(

Or am I just paranoid and have a high metabolic rate?

I have been frequenting the gym lately, and using protein supplements as well, as trainer recommends, but over 4 months of workout, I have only gained.. 3-4 kg

I am 5ft 11.5in and currently weigh 65kg.

I feel that with the workout/supplements, I should be putting on more *weight*.

You are probably exchanging fat for muscle, plus you are working out more which in turn boosts your metabolic rate. Protein alone won't add weight even though it helps your muscles. There's also a science to when you should use protein - like within 45 minutes of working out - to make sure it benefits your muscles. I think many people use protein throughout the day and some goes to fat as unused calories.

Genetics also plays a major role. You are who you are. Everyone seems to want to be smaller or larger than what they are, but not what they are. )

On the positive side... if you have worms, they're going to be healthy.

Weight wise - it depends on age and how much work you do. I dropped to sub 5% body fat in my twenties, simply by getting sick of eating and going back to 3 meals per day (only). That and 2hrs+ of gym daily.

On the other hand, these days I can put on weight no problem. I'm at 104kg now. : >

Getting back to the worms, it's no big deal to buy a worm tablet from a pharmacy. They won't look at you odd. We're talking precautionary only here. When you work with animals (*smiling*) it pays to be careful yes?

But murphy's law does say that the time you buy stuff like that - you'll get a young teenage girl at the counter.

Yea I can't seem to gain any freakin weight either. I currently weight about 160 lbs, have been working out solidly for about 4 months. I eat around 4000 cals a day spread over 6 meals/shakes. In those four months I have put on about 4 lbs or so. But I am getting alot bigger, my chest and arms are getting pretty big, but no weight! I think I am probably turning all my fat into muscle right now.
I am also the same height as you.

I'm also in the tall and skinny club. I'm pretty close to my peak weight right now, which is approximately 165 lbs (about 65 kg). I long ago resigned myself tot he fact that this is my body type; my whole family is the same - tall and thin, but with fairly broad shoulders.

You are what you are. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I mean, who wants to be Arnold anyway? Most of the girls I know are turned off by too much muscle.

Haha, thanks for all the replies Somewhat comforting to know.

Asked dad, he doubts I would have worms too.

I guess I just can't put on weight. Speaking of genetics here, he's lightweight too, and he eats a whole lot of food (leftovers, since usually the family can't always finish).

thingstodo : i doubt i'm burning that much fat, because I hardly have any to begin with. But I guess the increased metabolic rate with going to the gym explains it

Martian : I'm not going for a buff build anyways, just lean muscle would be fine with me.

Once again thanks for the replies Paranoid me. :*)

Barring travel to a 3rd world country, the likelyhood of you getting worms if extremely low. I wouldn't worry to much about that.

It's hard to build muscle, just keep at it and follow some of the lifters' here advice.

Have you traveled recently? I mean, I spent two months camping in rural Zambia last summer, so I had good reason to think I had worms... bought the meds and everything. I even had a shit test (stool sample) done when I got back, but there was nothing.

So take it from me: unless you've been traveling to very sketchy places and/or eating very sketchy things, you most likely don't have worms. You probably just have a very high metabolism... in which case, be grateful!

Realize too that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. So even if you are doing an even weight transfer of fat to muscle, you are going to need even more calories just to maintain, much less gain.

^.^ Thanks again

I'm in Malaysia by the way, and I'm pretty sure my food intake is quite hygenic. Mom cooks them most of the time~

So yeah, I'm convinced that I'm paranoid!

There's always hope you could still grow. I'm 6'2" and have been that way since 17 or 18 where I was about 140-145lbs, 21 now and am about 175lbs. This last year alone has been a ton of growth, probably 15lbs out of that 30lbs I gained over the 3 yrs and 10 of that 15lbs was in about 6 months. It amazed me everytime I'd step on the scale I'd have gained a few lbs. And I may still grow, I'm the same height as my dad and hes in the 180s so I'll likely see a bit more. Point is for about a year or so my weight was pretty constant and I thought I had stopped growing, so you never know.

muscular weight gain is usually less noticable than with fat,1 KILOGRAM of muscle is the size of a bar of soap ,whereas fat is the size of volleyball.

At 20,I couldn't gain. Could polish off half a large pizza and follow it up with half a gallon of ice cream and not think twice.
After 40, forget it....thinking about half a gallon of ice cream causes me to gain! Enjoy the high metabolism while you have it.
Mini-rant: you don't turn fat into muscle. You gain muscle which replaces the fat in the areas it accumulated. Always hated that misguided phrasing.
When you stop working out, the muscle shrinks back down and the fat, which doesn't ever completely go away as a cellular entity, grows again.
Ok, I'm better now

I'm in a similar situation.. 6' 1" and 150lbs. I just bought some weights to build up my arms and have started doing push-ups etc. I don't want to be huge, I just want to be bigger than a rake.

my question is, as I can't afford to join a gym, how often/long/how many reps/how much weight should I be lifting & how many push ups to get to a decent size chest and arms? Noticable, not arnie I mean?
