Listing of all stock symbols?

Can anyone direct me to a straightforward, reliable, and updated listing online off *all* stocks on *every* exchange?

I'm helping a friend out and writing some financial software, and I'm in need of a (hopefully free) source of all possible stock symbols. Any ideas?

Go to their custom screener, and screen something that all of the stocks will pass through, like "market cap > 1million".

Then you will get a list of 7000 or so stocks. If you want, I can email you an excel graph of with all of the stocks. I was going to post it here, but it really is way too huge for this.

Yeah np. Have your friend post some updates. I find the subject pretty interesting myself. I know some folks online who do the same sort of thing. Using simple algorithms to screen for potential stocks to buy or sell. Also, if your friend hasn't already, he should look into what are called CRON JOBS. That's some sort of process that other people use to update stock data.

Thanks for that list. I am making a program (or Excel) to allow me to use my own algorithm to tell how good a company is, and how much the stock price is inflated on hype and speculation.

Is there any way to find current stock price, p/e ratio, market cap, earnings estimates, and a bunch of other numbers on the Internet in a nice chart like that list. Or should I just enter them in for specific companies.

Entering the stuff in would be a big pain in the butt. Hmm... I know you can use cron jobs to grab fairly current data automatically. I don't know how to do it, but I know it has been done.

The guy that runs the above site uses cron jobs to find stocks making new highs with volume information included. I don't know if you can get PEs and market cap... Perhaps you should try contacting the author of uglychart.com to learn more about this stuff.

But with cron jobs, you would have to go from Excel to something web based. And if you do, I would recommend learning a tad of PHP. Seems like a good programming language to manipulate those numbers to your liking. In any case, good luck.

Cron jobs are a linux/unix based program that will run every so often. You can write a simple VB script in Excel to run also. But, I am a long-term investor. I work during the day, so I can't watch the stock price go up and down throughout the day. So, I would only need to run this at the end of the week, or maybe during the week at night if I ave time. I would rather have the data in a csv or dat file on my computer, rather than parse some webpage.

And the thing is, there is always some uncertainty and risk. I would just like this program to run my equation to see what the history and expectations of this company are in plain english and compared to their competitors.

For example, I just sold my Intel shares on Dec 30, 2005. I got lucky. Luck shouldn't have that much to do with it. But, nobody knew that they weren't going to meet expectations this past quarter. And it is humans that are buying and selling, and everyone wants to make money.

This is, imo, the definitive source for techinical information on stocks. It has a directory that lists ALL stocks and indexes, and has a GREAT Market Summary section that shows lists of stock that made 52-week highs and all kinds of other measurements.
