Cleaning tobacco pipes

Hey there-

I know smoking is a bad habit but let's forget about the debate for a while. Please.

Does anyone here know how to clean a pipe- especially the mouthpiece properly? I mean, especially the part on the mouthpiece that is so small that basically nothing can reach... I have checked out websites but all they say was how to clean the bigger cavities (which is obvious how).

Any help, suggestions, links would be extremely appreciated.

what material are we talking about?

the bowl part is wood and the mouthpiece is just a cheap .. plastic part i would guess

Make sure you get the most potent alcohol you can, anything over 70% should work, but higher is better. Also, I always thought you could get new tips at a tobacco shop.

cool- i'll try it with the rubbing alcohol (and I promise I will remember to wash it with hot water afterwards- fire hazard, fire hazard?)

Aye.. local tobacco store? It's difficult to find, if you happen to live around Vancouver can you point me the way to go?

actually it's not that it's a fire hazard, it's more that the alcohol breaks down the resin and the hot water helps wash it off :)

Oh- the fire hazard I said was something like:

Lefty soaks pipe in alcohol
Lefty doesnt wash it away with hot water
Lefty thought the pipe is dry
Lefty lights up
Lefty gets burnt.

Lefty, once you remove the pipe from the alcohol, even if you don't rinse it off in hot water, the alcohol will evaporate long before you'd have to worry about it flaring up on you :).

I'm not a pipe expert, but I would be hesitant to soak my pipe in alcohol. The alcohol might damage it. I would try the directions below:

bowl, believing that it promotes a good cake. If you like, try both

forgo this luxury until you have enough pipes to do so.

If the airhole of your pipe is large enough in diameter that there is little resistance when you do this, you may want to fold the cleaner in half in order to scrub the sides of the airhole properly. Once your dry pipe cleaner comes out of the airhole the same color it was when it went in, run one more dry cleaner through the airhole to absorb any residual moisture. Using a cotton swab or shank brush, clean out the tenon, the portion of the pipe where the stem attaches to the bowl. a doubled over regular pipe cleaner will do in a pinch. If your stem or bowl has a band, now is the time to polish it, using a good silver, or other metal, polish, depending on what your band is made of. Carefully reinsert the stem into the bowl, and give the pipe a good wipe with a soft cloth, perhaps impregnated with a compound such as Briar Pipe Wipe. Cleaning over, allow your pipe to sit for a day or so before smoking it, to allow the alcohol to completely evaporate. If you have cleaned most or all of your briar pipes at once, now is a good time to smoke your meerschaums and corncobs you have been neglecting.

Both sites above are for serious pipe smokers. If you're smoking something other than tobacco, you might not care much about your pipe. Regardless, I would use alcohol sparingly. Also, only remove the stem after your pipe has cooled completely. Repeatedly removing the stem from a hot pipe could damage your pipe.

Pipe cleaners have always worked well for me in the past, even with the smaller areas of my pipe. But if you are soaking your pipe you should remember to be patient and try to not let the Alcohol you are using to touch the finish on the wood part of the pipe (the outside of the bowl).

hmmmm i've wanted to try pipe smoking... i like to enjoy cigars and the hookah occasionally... a pipe may be a nice addition...

hmm, Lefty born in 1986 smoking a tobacco pipe? Suuuuuuuure. Forgive me if im wrong here but......... Ok, ive cleaned a lot of pipes in my day, but they were small and made of metal. What i used to do was find some kind of small tool that could fit into the pipe pieces. A small screwdriver for big parts and a paper clip for long, tubular parts. I would scrape out the big globs of resin that i could. Then, where it would fit, I would twist a tissue into the pieces and pull it out when it couldnt go any further. That was usually enough for me, but if it got really bad i would let it soak in Acetone and rinse off thoroughly when it was done.

They also make pipe cleaners. Its an 8 inch piece of thin wire with tiny rough bristles on it. Use it as i described my tissue technique.
