Anicent Rome: Lion & Tiger fights?

Just a small extra credit question but I cannot find any answers. So as a last resort, I come to the great knowledgable people of TFP =) The question wants to know who won the colleseum fights of the Lion's and Tiger's in Ancient Rome?

If you could provide a link that would be wonderful!

Uncle Pony 09-27-2005 09:57 PM

Do you mean lions vs tigers or gladiators vs lions/tigers?

Artsemis 09-28-2005 08:08 AM

Unless I misunderstood, it was Lions vs. Tigers.

Uncle Pony 09-28-2005 08:13 AM

One on one, I'd bet on the tiger.

I've never heard of a lion killing a crocodile, but a tiger is capable of it.

The average tiger outweighs a male lion by apprx. 100-150 lbs, Although the mane on the lion would help in it's defense.

I've never seen any stats in regards to fights between lions and tigers.

I don't think the Romans would put these animals against each other because they were rather rare and expensive at that time and place. Putting them up against the unarmed christian is one thing, they wont suffer much damage. Cat vs cat would get rather ugly.

This is the best question EVAR!!11!

Check out this video. I haven't seen it yet.

LOL.

The instructor did say it would be difficult to find information on. The class is World Civilization.

Computer generated lions and tigers duking it out, eh? Sounds lame to me. Maybe Turbotom will know something about lions vs tigers in the Roman empire. I'll ask.

According to contemporary sources, they weren't rare at all. Thousands and thousands of lions, elephants, panthers, bears, tigers etc are reported to have been killed for entertainment in the venationes (animal hunts). Dio mentions a game celebrated by Trajan in when some eleven thousand animals were slain. They did both animals vs. animals and animals vs. humans fights, not only those sentenced to death, but also special bestiarii (beast fighters). They were mostly untrained though, and ran a high risk of injury. Seneca tells a story of a bestiarius who rather than going out on the arena and fight chose to choke himself to death with a sponge on a stick, a Roman version of toilet paper. Ripped to pieces by a lion or choking on an assbrush? Tough choice.

Can't find anything specific on lion vs. tiger though. Methinks it would depend on how many of each there was, and their general state. Romans weren't too fond of pitting fair fights imo. They wanted blood, and lots of it.

"Would that be a Siberian Tiger or a Sumatran Tiger?"

"I don't know... wait... aaaaaahhh!"

aKula 09-29-2005 06:10 AM

The lions I would think would be more inclined to work together. I think they kill other big cats in their territory (chettah mothers protecting their young). By the way great reference Charlatan.

I once heard this, 1 lion versus 1 tiger the tiger wins (not even close). 8 lions versus 8 tigers the lions win (not even close).

of course i don't have any proof about this but the logic was lions are pack animals and work in a pack well where tigers are more solo animals.

roadkill 10-10-2005 04:24 PM

I'm kind of convinced that one on one tiger wins and in groups the lions win. Not that there aren't exceptions but just generalizations and logic kind of dictate that.

hrandani 10-10-2005 09:18 PM

I think it would depend on whether we're talking male or female lions here.

Female lions do all the work; hunting ; etc and they do have a pack mentality

Male lions do the heavy lifting. I think they sleep 20-23 hours a day, though.

Lwang9276 10-10-2005 09:51 PM

hmm i think a tiger would win cuz the stripes would confuse the lion... ahahah but seriously i think the lion would win cuz they seem a lot more ferocious

Randerolf 10-12-2005 09:01 AM

What about a Liger vs a Jaguar? Taped together, knife fight style a la Michael Jackson's "Beat It" video?"

Spanxxx 10-15-2005 06:10 PM

I think Tiger would win. He can hit at least a good 400 yards.

SERPENT7 10-24-2005 11:00 PM

Artsemis,
The gladiators fought the lions and tigers. And even then, they only fought the old animals. (They were far too expensive for anything but eating the weak, helpless christians!)
They did not fight each other. (Atleast not that I know of.)

The Discovery Channel did do an Animal Face-Off show (remember that Shark vs. Crocodile thing?) and apparently there was a Tiger vs. Lion fight they had. I don't have the footage, nor know the winner, but if you really wanted you could probably track it down or order it from somewhere.

When comparing males, the tiger is larger and the true king of the jungle as the lion doesn't even live in jungles but usually on african savanahs.

In addition to the lion fight, they showed 2 German Shepards fighting, and in another fight, a German Shepard and a smaller dog. The smaller dog won cause it was quicker.

If you can track down the uncut video you should be able to see what I'm talking about.
