(Carpentry) Replacing water damaged exterior
 

Hello all,

I have several pieces of water damaged exterior wood. One piece is around the garage door, the others are around the bay window. Normally this would be a pretty easy replacement, but the width of the wood is making this difficult to do properly.

The boards are 1" thick. (Not .75" like a standard 1")...exactly 1". Where can I find exterior boards in this size?

You'll have to go to a "real" lumber yard to find wood like this. Home Depot doesn't carry it (they may be able to special order it). Look in your yellow pages for lumber yards and start callling. Or you can buy wood that is too large and cut it down.

It's all about the jargon....

The boards you are looking for are generally referred to as 5/4 (five quarters). Like vanblah said you will not find them at the orange store you will need to call around to 'real' lumber yards.

Sounds as if you have an "older" home. I run into this crap all of the time. My house was built back when a 2x4 really was...2" x 4". It makes for an interesting time trying to do improvement projects, and fit the "new" into the "old".
And yes, 84 Lumber is a good "real" lumber yard. Just. They're starting to lean further into the chain store camp. Still...I stay the hell away from Home Depot, at all costs. Your absolute best bet...is Mom & Pop, if there are still any around you. Good ol' M&P always recieve the lion's share of my business, and show their appreciation for it, more than Home Depot ever will.

I appreciate all of the help thus far. I have a call into 84 and they seemed genuinely interested in solving my problem. I'm supposed to swing by their local center and take a look at the board they have available. I'll let you guys/gals know how it goes, and I may even post a photo or two. Thanks again.

/agree with everyone so far. Often heard boards like this refered to as 'rough cut' (in case it may help at this point) around here, probably because they havent been planed down to the finished wood people are used to seeing.

If possible take a sample with you. Are they weatherboards or fascia boards?

Fascia boards run horizontal below the roof line correct? The boards I need replaced run vertical where the siding ends. I'll post photos this weekend with measurements.

Sounds like that would be one side of a corner post. While you could take 2x lumber and resaw or put it through a bench planer, 5/4 is your ticket. Depending on how good your local yard is, they should have 5/4 in standard nominal widths. Take the time to backprime or stainseal the reverse and endcuts for maximum longevity.

Thanks Kazoo. I ended up finding the 5/4 x 4" at the Orange store, but I'll need the same 5/4 in a width of 8" for repairs around our bay window.

If Home Despot doesn't have 5/4 x 8, other local yards don't carry it and this is a painted application, consider doweling and using Gorilla Glue to make a wider piece from two narrower lengths. Knock off the dried squeeze out glue with a hand chisel and smooth joint irregularities with a belt or RO sander on the show face.
