How to get rid of scars?

Is there a way to get rid of scars or make them fade? I have some very prominent scars that I really don't want people to see, but they're in a very visible place, so I was just wondering if there was anything I could do about it.

Thanks.

JStrider 04-18-2005 04:55 PM

well their pretty much permanent...
but they can be lightend a bit...

i know there are products you can buy... go look at walmart by the neosporin and whatnot...

also if they are still pretty fresh you can get vitamin E oil and rub it into the scars once or twice a day... supposedly that helps

Temporary_User 04-18-2005 07:14 PM

cant you get laser treatment or something like that now-a-days?

I think that's available, and If I could afford it, I would. lol

Thanks for the responses...I suppose I'll just have to experiment and see what works. :|

lindseylatch 04-18-2005 07:49 PM

I believe if the scar is still pink (usually within a year of getting injured), those creams and stuff will work, but if it's white, you'll just have to let it fade over time. Most of those scar reducers are a bunch of crap.
Do some searching online on a medical website. they might have some better advice. :)

settie 04-19-2005 12:25 PM

I don't remember who said this, but:
"If you don't have any scars, you aren't living."
;)
Lindseylatch has a point, I've tried some scar reducing creams, and they didn't make a real big difference. But scars get smaller in time, and I dunno, I guess I just learned to live with mine.

iamnormal 04-19-2005 03:04 PM

scars are reminders of growing wiser

Ha, like the saying "if you don't fall off, you ain't riding right" (said about a number of things involving riding...).

I'm curious what these scars are, and why you don't want them seen?
I have some scars from stupiud shit I've done, like bloody knuckles, but those have faded so much you practically need a magnifying glass to see them.

I'd rather not say. I'd probably get all kinds of shit from people about it. Though I'm sure you can guess. *shrugs*

Nope, I can't guess...

Majoring in Creative Writing has never seemed altogether dangerous to me...

lindseylatch 04-19-2005 09:02 PM

Based on my guess, there could be ways to cover them up, like those trendy sweat band thingies they sell at skate shops, if the scars are on your wrists.
It's obviously uncomfortable in summer, but long sleeve shirts and such are good. I worked with someone who had tattoos on her forearms, and she just wore a sweatshirt all the time.

Yeah, I've been wearing long sleeve shirts, but I'm heading to the beach with my family next month, and I can't exactly do that then because they'll know something's up. And it'll just be too damn hot.

Anyway...I'll see what I can figure out. If all else fails, I'll resort to some kind of makeup. It won't cover them completely, but it'll make them seem lighter and less visible.

It CAN be quite dangerous, especially when you have to take a "Technical and Scientific Writing" course that can easily bore someone to death.

The best type of scar covering that i've used was Mederma. I sliced my leg open on an apholestry staple behind a couch, and have been self-conscious about it for a few years. It had faded into a pink scar, but after using the stuff, it faded pretty decently. Also, if your going to the beach, and your self-conscious about letting your family see (understandable), than use a non water soluable light foundation (that blends with your skin). Mederma is quite expensive (20 bucks or so)...but as far as i can tell, it worked :), otherwise if your just worried about the quick fix, foundation would be my safest bet.

Thanks a lot. :)

There are all sorts of scar treatments out there...neosporin has one, curad and bandaid have them, mederma...I don't know if they work or not though.

clavus 04-21-2005 09:37 AM

If it's going to cause a major embarassment at the beach, you could heavily bandage them or cast them. You need to make up a story to go along with it.

I know this will come as a SHOCK to people, but I've had some scars. The docs told me to keep them out of the sun and to apply vitamin E to them. Buy vitamin E pills, the squishy kind. Puncture them and squirt the vitimin-filled goo right onto the scars.

Guess what: I'm trying.

Also, notice I said "scars" and not "cuts." Because I haven't done it in weeks, thank you.

Be nice.

I'm sure she knows that it's not a good thing. If someone saying "don't cut yourself" were going to work, then she probably wouldn't be doing it.
Try being supportive. That'll help a lot more.

Thanks, lindseylatch.

I knew there would be at least one person who'd give me shit for it. *shrugs* Oh, well.

iamnormal 04-23-2005 08:01 PM

They are your scars. They arn't for anyone else so don't give a shit what others think of it.

Is this the "how to take a cheap shot at someone asking for help" thread?

Cylvre 04-28-2005 12:05 AM

I had a good friend that had almost this exact same problem. Only in her case she was trying to cover them up during a theatre production in which she was the female lead. She tried using stage-base to cover them and while it did lessen the color contrast and the noticablity of that the smooth look of the scars were still noticable, and it had a tendancy to sweat off. She ended up wearing a zip-up sweater backstgae but obviously that isn't going to work with you. I'd say base would be the best bet, but make sure to be careful about wiping it off and the like if you find one that works.

On a different note: If you ever need someone to talk to or anything drop me an e-mail through my profile or look me up on AIM (my screen name is also in my profile). I used to cut, haven't for some time now, but I know how tough it is to stop... Good Luck.

rhaevyn 04-28-2005 08:36 AM

Thanks to everyone. I ended up getting a waterproof foundation that's working pretty well so far. I appreciate all your suggestions.

I'd have to agree with this. It's something that is pretty much in your past (like you said, scars, not cuts), so why should your family bother you about it? And if they do, you could just ask them: "Don't you have any scars, too?"

If you don't make a big deal of them, neither will anyone else. You're probably just a little self conscious about them, which I understand, but don't cover them up for your family members.

BAMF 05-10-2005 02:45 PM

I have a bigass scar on my side..long story short, I was in a riot and got checked into a lamp post by a gigantic guy looking to hurt people...

Ive been looking to reduce this for a while, its like 8 cm^2....my brother also use to be fat and has stretch marks (I think thats what they are called)...Will this mederma stuff work for that? Also, neither of us can afford health insurance, so it would have to be non-perscription. Is it?

jhkayakr 05-10-2005 02:47 PM

I've heard that rubbing vitamin e on the scar can help them heal/fade. The e in the vitamin capsules.

Woody182 05-14-2005 02:36 PM

rhaevyn, continue to battle that demon of yours. You have as much support as you want on a place like this. TONS of people to talk to, just keep fighting, and good luck!

Scars are forever a part of you.

Charlatan 05-15-2005 08:00 AM

I have always been a fan of scars...

My wife has a great big (four inches long, one inch wide) scar on her upper arm (she almost lost her arm in a horse riding accident). It is clearly visible whenever she wears summer dresses, T-shirts, etc.

I think it is very cool that she has never tried to disguise or hide it. To me, it is a lot like a tattoo. It marks her personal history on her body in an indelible fashion.

I don't know what your scars are from or what they look like but sometimes it is just a matter of taking a different approach to see the positive.

Why hide? Be honest, and tell them you're trying to change and that you know it's wrong to do. Maybe you'll get a good therapist out of the deal. There's nothing wrong with saying you need help. :)

Slavakion 05-15-2005 01:00 PM

When I got a hot oil burn on my forearm, I put some Vitamin E on it per suggestion of TFP. I don't really know if it helped or not, but my scar is barely visible.

FloydianOne 05-22-2005 09:30 AM

As much as you dont want them to find the scars it might be the best thing to happen because im sure your family loves you and would help you when times get rough, and make sure you dont hurt yourself.

raeanna74 05-22-2005 10:27 AM

I have a few scars that don't want to fade very well. I've found that using a self tanner a day or so before I go swimming or something helps to cover them up and it doesn't wash off as easily as some makeup. Though if you still want to us makeup you'd have to match the color of your skin with the self tanner.

I like Neutrogena foaming bronzer and self tanner. Does a good job and dries quickly so that you can get dressed without messing up your clothes. It's also easy to see how evenly you've spread it because of the instant bronzer in it. Just make sure you put lotion on her hands before you put the tanner on and then scrub them with an exfoliant afterwards. I'd say wear surgical gloves to put the tanner on but since it's near your hands the gloves might get in the way.
