How to removing CD jewell box labels?
The removing car windows stickers thread reminded me of a problem.
I have been removing CD jewell box price & advertising labels by finger nail and thumb rubbing. Dish detergent does not work so well and stronger chemicals may cloud the plastic. Anyone know a good method to remove the labels? (please) |
Get a knife
Or buy used CD's off ebay for $3 apiece |
Goo Gone is your best friend in this use.
|
place the cd case in warm water. this will loosen the sticky and should peel off without a problem.

thank you for your helpful replies.
I don't think I'm going to find Goo Gone here in Holland. Can someone tell me the active ingredient(s)? |
Use a hair dryer and set it on low heat. Go over the label several time (until it feels hot), peel one corner with a pin and lift it. If low heat doesn't work, go to high heat but be careful not to get burned. You can warm up the label adhesive from the backside of the label, too.

i need to find me a bottle or box or cartridge of this GOO GONE that people speak of. sounds like magic...
|
...and a razor blade.

Here in New Zealand, you can get a spray from the supermarket (don't remember the name), but it should be pretty obvious.
If you peel the sticker really carefully/slowly and take care of any splits, you should be ok in removing it all. |
This might be best.
Sticker Lifter Combine Goo Gone's goo-removing expertise with our handy Sticker Lifter tool and you have Goo Gone Sticker Lifter, the easy sticker, label, gum, tape and decal removing system. Sticker Lifter works immediately to loosen the adhesive bond, while our ergonomic, multi-use Sticker Lifter tool easily lifts the problem right off the surface - clean and scratch-free. |
I've just always been really good about doing it by hand with little or no sticky stuff left over. Call it a talent I guess
|
I've always used the finger nail and thumb rub technique :-)
Sometimes adding dish detergent to remove stubborn glue. I want to find a better way. I don't want to cloud the plastic or skratch it. I want the labels to fall off or wipe away leaving no residue. That is my quest. |
After I peel it off and it still has some of that sticky stuff left on the cover, I use masking tape or something to stick it off.
|
I do two steps:
1. Nail polish remover - Only problem is it creates a "foggy" smudge on some surfaces like plastic or glass sometimes. 2. Windex - To remove any smudges Just use one of those pads that your mother/gf uses to wipe off their makeup or whatever the hell those little round white cusiony pads are for for tep 1 and then use a paper towel for step 2. |
masking tape...hmm
use something sticky to remove something sticky :-) |
There's actually a really easy technique that involves no liquids:
Most of the time, the sticky label is on the top edge of the CD. Gently, pull the hinge out of its slot on the bottom/opposite side from the label. Pull the 2 halves apart, remove the sticker, and re-assemble. |
Get either a can of computer component cooler from Radio Shack (or local electronics store) or a can of compressed air (air duster for a computer).
Either spray on the cooler or turn the air can upside down and spray the label until it's soaked. Be careful, it will come out at a temperature low enough to cause frostbite. When it ices over, scrape the sticker off with a plastic tab from a bag of bread. Side note: if you spray an upside-down can of duster on an envelope, it will become trasnparent for a few seconds. If you take a digital photo in that time, you can read the first layer of text and reconstruct the next layer or two of paper. Let it air dry and nobody will ever know |

This is what I do. There is usually some residue though you'll need to use goo gone or mineral spirits to remove. |

Works very well! |
I think that the razor blade method works the best. It has not failed me yet, and dear god I buy a lot of CD's.

Eucalyptus oil will probably work but im not sure if it will make it fog at all
|
I've always used lighter fluid like you use for a Zippo, works great to get any residue off

wow, this thread is still alive.
no fogging allowed :-) Quote: Originally Posted by DirtyDave There's actually a really easy technique that involves no liquids: Most of the time, the sticky label is on the top edge of the CD. It seems to say just peel the label off. Or remove a label that is not glued. If it was that easy I would not have started the thread. |
flat5, you're not the only who doesn't get it, but I figured it was something they did in the US, but now I'm not so sure...
Can someone post a picture of what it's suppose to look like? |
acetone anyone? get some fingernail polish remover, just make sure it's not the non-acetone kind.
or does that cloud the plastic? |
lighter fluid also works... eg: zippo fluid
|
yeah, no one is saying if the spirit solutions cloud the plastic.
Just got to test it I guess. |
