cough supressants/expectorants
Why are these seemingly counter-intuitive things so often packaged together in one bottle?
I'm on the edge of pneumonia, I understand I need to hack this shit up, fine. Why promote the hacking though and at the same time toss in some Codeine "So you won't have to cough". Not that the latter seems to be working at all. Is the "cough suppressant" line on all those medications just a distracting trick put there to make you feel better?

Cough is triggered by stimulus. When you are infected you have an inflammatory process that in itself is enough to trigger a cough. Since a cough will be there when you need it for sludge elimination- it merely reduces the cough from irritability. So you get the relief from the useless cough stimulus. But it won't reduce it enough to supress a full fledged lung butter elimination hack!!!
Happy illness! Actually- Get better soon.

My percscription has codiene in it for the pain of my bronchitis, I have never once been told (and I've suffered with bronchitis since I was born) that the codiene was to supress the cough

sticky-Thanks, that makes sense I suppose. I didn't realize the medicine could differentiate between the two, I guess.
Shani-That may well be true for you, but that's exactly what the doctor told me. Also, the bottle says "Expectorant/Cough Suppressant" and has two ingredients:Guaifenesin and Codeine. And boy is it disgusting. Even if the bottle is crazy, I was still curious because it's a combo you find in all types of OtC meds too.

The expectorant may just be to help make your coughs more...uh...efficient; they help you get all the mucous up instead of all the crap sitting in your lungs. So you may cough less, but your coughs will do more for you
