How to remove bad smell from shirt

Hey guys!

Up until now I used Helena Rubinstein's Anti-Perspirant Stick Deodorant in order to block sweat during the day. But then a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the stuff was discolouring my shirts (as the cloth got in contact with it at the arm pit area) which itself was very annoying. But the worst part is that the area smell terribly as well! And it won't go away no matter how many times I've tried washing it.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the smell?

I think that this might be something specific to anti-perspirants. I used to use an anti-perspirant but then began using plain deodorant instead. Later I noticed that my undershirt's pits no longer yellowed.

Do they sell Febreeze or something similar over there? It's a spray that supposedly takes the smell out of things... I've never tried it personally...

If you try oxyclean, I know the bleach works out the stains. If the stains are gone, I would think the smell would be gone as well.

No can do! These are a black and a blue shirt so the bleached areas will be visible and look stupid

I've always used white vinegar to get deodorant stains out of my clothing. I'm not sure how well it works on colored fabrics though. Using baby wipes sometimes gets stains out for me too, but I've never tried them on deodorant stains.

Oxyclean works on colors, no bleaching effect.

There are lots of "new" products out there that will handle this problem effectively. Try some of the products designed for washing/bleaching nappies. These are now "colour safe" and shouldn't bleach your shirt at all. In Australia there's a product called NapiSan that does exactly this. It's just a powder that you add to the wash. Alternatively you can add a small amount of water to the powder and make a paste to rub onto the stain before washing.

But, despite the new products, sometimes the "old" tips are best. For perspiration stains try vinegar or, for very stubborn stains, try cream of tartar and some disolved aspirin. I'm not kidding! Once you use vinegar just wash normally and this will remove both the perspiration smell, but also that of the vinegar.

Check out the website http://www.chemistry.co.nz/stain_frame.htm. It was created by a chemist and describes some great methods of removing hundreds of different kinds of stains easily.

Hope this helps.

We have used Baking Soda in the washer to eliminate swaet smells. However it doesn't work very well just putting in the wash and running it. We figured out that the clothes just needed to soak in the baking soda solution for a little while.

You wash the vinegar out of the shirt when you're done removing the stain, silly.

And baby wipes are towels moistened with the sweat of babies. Ok, I can't back that up. I dunno what they are called in the land of silly-stuck-together-letters, but in America, they are the moistened wipes that you use to clean a baby's ass with. They come in handy for lots of things.

Just a tip, spraying too much Fabrize actually has the reverse effect, to me it smells like vomit. If you try it don't overdo it!

Someone should just send you over a thing of Oxyclean!

Excellent tips Mr Mephisto - thanks so much!

Since both you and fhqwhgads suggested vinegar I'm gonna try that first since it's easy to come by and cheap

Yeah I know those but... they're scentless so why would they work?

And we do not have silly-stuck-together-letter! That would be the Greek!

Not as bad as the regular stuff? Then they DO stink up as well so there's no sense in me using those is there?

I'm trough with these deo sticks. I'm gonna use some regular Anti-Perspirant deo spray instead from now on

I swear by febreze.....besides the spray they make something to put in your wash when you add your detergent....works like a charm(and if it works on cat pee you KNOW it works on anything lol) you might check the detergent aisle at your grocers...if they sell the spray there they just might sell that too

They do sell febreze here and if it really is capable of removing cat pee then I have got to try it!

It does. I had my male cat pee in the car 1/2 block from the house returning from getting him fixed. Male cat urine really stinks! I tried all sorts of stuff, from steam cleaning, to baking soda, etc. Finally I sprayed Febreze in there, and the cat pee smell went away, but I did have to put up with the Febreze smell for a couple of weeks. Kind of overpowering flower smell when you spray a lot of it.

you cant really smell the stuff that you wash your clothes with...its just like an odor neutralizer...it doesnt have the "febreze" smell
