Hotel Phone Lines...

I'm very sorry if I posted this in the wrong place, but I need the "Knowledge" of someone familiar with the way phone lines (and relationships) work.

Quick back story: My wife is out of town this week training and staying in a hotel. She didn't call me last night when she said she would, which didn't bother me. But today she called and said that she tried to call last night, but the hotel has some wierd problem when too many people are trying to make calls, so she couldn't get a connection. I would assume she only tried for a minute or two because she was on her way out.

My question is this: How likely is it that the hotel might have a problem with it's phone lines, and how might I find out if they do. Maybe I'm overreacting because I can see no reason for her to lie about missing a call, but seriously, her story seems like total BS to me. It just kind of freaks me out to think that she could be lieing to me.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and opinions.

It is entirely possible that they have, say 80 rooms and 15 phone lines. I know our office has 25 people and 8 phone lines. Statistically, it shouldn't cause a problem, but there is that rare chance that "all the circuits are busy", especially if everyone tried to call home at 8 pm.

As I say quite often, I spent about 45 + weeks a year in a hotel. I'm not sure I've ever seen it happen with local calls, but I have seen it happen with long distance calls, that I can't get a line, and I have to try again later. (This is especially true in some Marriotts that have free long distance when you get the high speed access.)

Cell phone is the only way to go when travelling.

Here's how that aspect of phone switches work:

The basic idea is based on statistics that say that for any N phone lines, there will rarely be more than so many percent of them in demand. So only that many actual outgoing lines are available to the switch. If more than that many people try to call at the same time, someone gets the fast busy signal, an error message, or no dial tone.

The point is that she's probably telling the truth. Why are you having problems trusting her? That's a rhetorical question, BTW.

Feeling better...

Thanks everyone, I know I'm an idiot.

I didn't think anyone would answer this so quickly. I definitely feel better.

As for the "rhetorical" trust question: It's her first long out of town trip since we've been together (5 years), so I don't think I've been too crazy. I guess I just convinced myself that she was lying, and I couldn't get rid of that icky feeling. I am fully aware that my trust / jealousy issues come from my low self-esteem, but sometimes they get the better of me.
