New computer desk/workstation

So here's the story, I have 5 computers, 3 monitors, 3 keyboards, 2 printers, a scanner, etc. and a 10x12 space in a finished basement to put it in. I need ideas for building a nice looking desk that will house all of that stuff and then some. I'm not much for designing furniture and my wife thinks I'm insane for wanting to build something myself, not only that, but she thinks I can't. I really want to prove her wrong, so if anyone has any plans or ideas for an L-shaped workcenter that would be great. Thanks.

How about using just one keyboard and one monitor, and using a switch to control the different computers? That would cut down on desk space.

redlemon, I have a switch already, but there are three of us that could be on three computers all at the same time. Trust me, I wish I could just cut it down to one monitor, but that isn't a possibility.

Whatever you end up doing, add a hutch or two. Those things are great for placing printers/scaners/books/ whatever you need to have laying around.

I ended up buying a "desk" from a college kid, made from two file cabinets and a section of countertop. The cabinets give me tons of drawer space, and the top is a nice big, flat surface to work on. It's got a keyboard tray mounted underneath, which frees up even more space on the top. When it's put together, it could almost pass for a real desk (except the countertop's backsplash looks a little funny ). If you didn't want to use countertop, I would think a piece of 1 or 1 1/4" MDF would work just as well. To do an L-shaped desk, you could get some adjustable table legs to support the corner, and join two pieces of MDF to make the L, with a filing cabinet at each end. I'm considering doing something similar with my setup, if I ever have a little more space.

-D.

How is the project coming? What is your budget?

The project hasn't gotten off the ground yet, Bossnass. I'm still waiting for ideas, asking friends, family, searching the net....I just don't know what I'm looking for, but I'll know it when I see it. I would prefer to use real wood, not MDF, because it looks nicer, beyond that, I have no idea what I want.

As far as budget, there is pretty much no set limit. I will spend what I need in order to get/make what I want.

I wish I were skilled at building projects... I never can find any decent computer desks that fit exactly what I want.

Just know that with three possible users at once, an L-shaped desk is almost entirely out of the question, unless you all feel like getting pretty cozy when you are on the computer... or unless the desk is really big.

So the next set of questions:

What is your desk building skill level, and how is your tool supply/workshop area?

How many chairs do you have? Assuming three, since you mentioned possibly three people working at one time. What is your current setup? How much other stuff do you have, other then the computer equipment? I have three computers in here (one is a laptop, so it's not really in here), but they are minor compared to what is in my filing cabinets and on all the shevles. I'm writing this from my corner desk in a 8x12 room and I can't imagine fitting three people in here at once.
