Someones got some splaining to do!

this is freaking me out, how does this work?

spindles 09-02-2004 05:37 PM

Actually, it is pure optical illusion. The pieces do not actually fit together.

The blue piece fitted onto the red piece does not actually give a straight line (the ratio of angles (3:8 and 5:13) are not the same.

The picture is small enough so that the difference is not noticeable, but they do not actually fit perfectly.

That's a kick ass optical illusion. I was racking my brain and I couldn't figure the damn thing out.

AxelF 09-05-2004 06:55 PM

Yeah, there is a thin slice of space along the new diagonal line that equals one square. there are at leastone more version of that one. They are great!

water_boy1999 09-07-2004 12:07 PM

That is pretty cool. Of course I have a headache from trying to figure it out......

Stiltzkin 10-02-2004 10:01 AM

Saw this problem many, many years ago. I was probably around 12, and I spent a whole week trying to solve it, when I realized the pieces don't really fit together >.<;

telekinetic 10-03-2004 05:47 AM

yeah, at that scale you can fudge a whole box's worth of gap between the two lines.

jonjon42 10-07-2004 01:43 PM

and thus...life once again makes sense

tropple 10-08-2004 03:11 AM

lol.. then you should try out the stuff that they say. All will yield results telling you the same.

Interestingly though, recently went to a Seurat exhibit that explained similar thing, where light next to dark is ligher and such. forget what the name for it is though.
