Removing pages from magazine?
What is the best way to "unbind" or remove pages from a magazine? Basically I would like to scan my magazines and start a database of my subscriptions while lowering the risk of a fire hazard...Thanks!

If you're not interested in keeping the magazines afterwards, I have two suggestions:
1. If the magazine has staples, remove them and gently pull the pages out. 2. If the magazine does not have staples, cut them out individually with a razor blade or Xacto knife, or all at once (sort of) by cutting through the binding at the very edge of the magazine. |
It's a maxim magazine in question held together by glue. I don't have an xacto knife available and was wondering what options i had. It's held by glue it looks like so maybe a hair dryer? Thanks for the reply!

Try going to the library and using thier blade for cropping pages. Schools and printers often times have them; I don't see why you could not use them for free.

Use a box cutter to cut the binding off if you want multiple pages. A single edge razor blade works well too. Box cutters are availalbe in heavy duty versions that have a thicker blade that resist breaking better.

You don't have an Xtaco knife?
You can buy craft knifes at shops like KMart and Wal Mart for less than a dollar. You must have a lot of spare storage space (HDD) if you're willing to scan them rather than throw them out or pack them into boxes! I can't imagine wanting to keep Maxims. Read them yes, but actually permanently keep them? Mr Mephisto |
Scanning Maxim? What a waste of HDD space.

You need to buy an Xacto dude. Don't get the cheapest one you can find either, it's important that it's constructed solidly. If I worked at a library and someone asked to use expensive and potentially hazaradous equipment so they could archive their cum-stained Maxim collection my answer would be "No."

I personally have always just used a run of the mill razor blade, you can get a pack of like 10 for buck or something at walmart. If you really want to get fancy go to the craft section or something like Jo-Ann's Fabrics and purchase a rotary cutter. They will cut through paper like butter but paper dulls blades quickly and the blade for one of these are about 6 dollars.

If you have a lot of them, take them to Kinko's or some other copy shop that has a paper cutter. They usually have a giant electric cutter that can cut through all of them at once.
It's usually like a dollar per cut. |
Jesus, it would take forever to scan and make a database for your magazines. Seems like a waste.

Thanks for the mostly useless suggestions, glad I came here for suggestions....
