anyone use a money clip?

I usually carry my money, and everything else, in a standard wallet; this adds up to 1.75 inches thick. When I dress up, it throws off the lines of my suit or tuxedo. So, I got a thin credit-card size pocket, with a clip on the side for bills, to use while dressed up.

Whenever I try to use this in public, I feel like a klutz. If it is the first time of the day, I have the bills in order, and I can pretty easily reach the bills I need. But when I get bills in return, I have to either jam them in randomly, which messes things up for the next time, or just stuff all the bills in my pocket, and sort it out in the bathroom or something.

Can anyone give me some tips on using this damn thing correctly?

twotimesadingo 05-20-2004 10:18 PM

I do it at the register, to be honest. Get your change, step to the side, place it in the right order, fold, and slide. Easy. Practice, if you need to. Taking a few extra seconds to do that doesn't look nearly as bad as you might imagine, to be honest.

Charlatan 05-21-2004 05:19 AM

I use a money clip for the same reason and my solution is the same as twotimesadingo

Of course I use Canadian $ so I don't have the issue of too many $1 bills. My problem is that I have a jingly pocketful of loonies and toonies...

Redlemon 05-21-2004 07:35 AM

Thanks. Do you clip them as a single bunch folded in the middle, or do you fold each individual bill? If it is a single wad, do you pull out the whole stack when making a payment?

asaris 05-21-2004 09:22 AM

I use a money clip when I dress up as well, though normally that's just for weddings, so I don't necessarily actually use the money...

I have done them as a single bunch folded in the middle, sorted by denomination. Your question made me think though - putting money in the stack might be faster if you did bunches folded in the middle, with each bunch being a particular denomination...

To answer the other part of your question, I just move to the side of the register so someone else can be served, and do my sorting there. It makes life easier. Also, I have just a money clip, seperate from a wallet. I have my metrocard, bank card, license, and some business cards in a business card holder in my back pocket. It is quite slim.

I also utilize the combination. Right back pocket has license, credit card, insurance card, college ID. Left back pocket has money clip.

In response to your second question, Redlemon, I fold everything in the middle. Outside bills (the ones you see when folded) are twenties, then tens, then fives, and ones in the middle; this means ones are the easiest to procure, which works for me well enough.

mr sticky 05-23-2004 12:34 PM

Use a clip that hinges. They are so much easier to deal with.

I am also the fold-in-one-bunch kind of guy. It really takes no more time than placing your cash into your pocket, that is if you do it in any semblance of order.

basmoq 05-29-2004 05:11 AM

Unfortunately, I have my drivers license, student ID, copy card, credit card, bank card, 5 red cross certification cards, conceal and carry permit, and cash all in the same wallet. I've been wanting to switch to a money clip for years, but I can't drop any of these cards, I have to carry them all, all the time.......

I think it's Health Canada's sneaky "Country-wide weight training program", myself. Bastards.

cameroncrazy822 06-02-2004 12:26 PM

nah bro, the coins keep falling out.... seriously no. I figured money clips were for people with multiple 20s in their pocket not just loose one's and a five.

BonesCPA 06-03-2004 07:10 AM

I've used on for years. I run into the same problem of the loose bills from change, but I figure it is not that big of a deal since how many times do you get more than three or four bills back. I just fold them up and slip it in the pocket and deal with it later on. As far as folding, one fold in the middle, otherwise it is too much work.

Remember, no one else's opinion counts, just yours. You aren't a klutz, you are just doing your own thing. (Unless of course you drop bills all over the floor, then you are a klutz.)

Wax_off 06-03-2004 01:01 PM

Forget the clip. Fold the money in half, small bills outside so you can easily whip out a buck or two, big bills inside so that you have access to them when making larger purchases, and stick it in your front pocket. The folded money stays flat, no problem. Fold change you get over the top (since they will be small bills) and stick it back in your pocket. Every once in a while you have to re-organize. Doesn't work for non-US currrency very well.

My business partner does it the gombah way and wraps his money around his ID, CC and a few business cards with a rubber band. No wallet.

Kepage23 06-03-2004 06:29 PM

I just seem to cram it all into my pocket. After a few days I have no idea how much money I have. When I change I just take the crumpled wad of money and switch pockets. It's always nice to go through it after a few days and find a $20 I had forgotten about.

Same here! I have a wallet but I don't use it to hold my $. I just pull out the wad o' cash whenever I need to pay for something w/ cash, which is rare because I almost always use my card.

Ilow 06-11-2004 07:58 PM

I've used a clip with an attached snap sleeve for years now. The clip is one of the hinged ones, and the "pocket" thing holds tons, including my license, 7 or 8 credit/debit cards and a few other ID's etc. Altogether it's still less than an inch thick. I think mine's by Fossil, but as I said it's at least 4 years old. Oh yeah, and I always carry it in my front pocket. I've always thought those small folding knives with clips on them were cool money clips, but I'd miss my card holder!

CheeseButtons 06-11-2004 10:45 PM

I used to use one, but no sense carrying around two things designed for the same purpose, I have to have a wallet anyways.

kurtisj 06-13-2004 09:20 PM

who could use a clip, when theres so many random-ass credit/debit/other shit cards, licenses and other misc. cards. a wallet suits that well

Yeah that the way I do it as well. Except I put my Liscense and my ATM card right in the middle of the bills folded once. I leave my wallet in the glove compartment of my truck. If I know I am going to need a creditcard or something in my wallet I grab it before I leave.

ratbastid 06-24-2004 01:45 PM

I have a Fossil money clip (gotten from the lurkster for Christmas) that has a clear window pocket on one side for ID, a pocket behind that for cards, and a magnetic money clip dealy for bills.

I do a single fold, and put the whole wad behind the magnetic clip. Only thing is, after half a dozen or so bills the magnet doesn't pull anymore. So I put one side of the folded bill wad into the magnet thing and let the other half flap.

This is my method as well. Long Live The Goombahs!

You people carry cash?

*boggles the mind*

:) .. I have a wallet. With no money. I almost never have cash. It's almost a joke amongst my friends and family. I use plastic everywhere. I've found my wallet to just be the place were I keep my receipts and every freaking plastic card that every store on the planet expects you to carry these days.

Ashton 07-03-2004 01:51 PM

I use a silver dollar money clip.

I have a Tiffany's money clip that my wife gave me when we got married with my initials on it. I use it every day and love it.

I fold the bills once, largest denominations on the outside (because it's easier to get things in center and I just roll like that). When I get change it's almost always in order anyway, which means that I can separate the singles and 5's, then insert the 10's and 20's as needed, which makes less work. When I'm in line, I usually have the money out of the clip, unfolded to the first single to make this easier.

Redlemon 06-02-2009 11:34 AM

Wow, didn't expect to see this one resurface. I got an ALL-ETT Billfold to replace my regular wallet. It's made of sailcloth, and with a double-high card insert method, becomes way way thinner.

Sometimes, surprises are good. Other times you realize you opened the door to the wrong restroom.

How much thinner?

Redlemon 06-02-2009 11:44 AM

Thin enough to make you wonder if you remembered to put your wallet in your pocket.

Baraka_Guru 06-02-2009 11:50 AM

Money clip? Ha, ha.... that's a good one. Next someone will ask me what institution I use for all my investments.

ratbastid 06-02-2009 12:02 PM

Damn. I've had my current money clip a long time...

telekinetic 06-02-2009 12:29 PM

I carry a matched set of a magnetic money clip and a business card case in ridiculously gaudy faux snake skin. They were $2 on clearance at Macy's, I only bought them to steal the magnets out of them, and they make me laugh every time I use them.

Before this, I had made a wallet with a money clip out of seatbelt. I should really make another one, I liked that wallet.

Charlatan 06-02-2009 04:10 PM

I've been using my current wallet for just over ten years. I bought it when I made my first trip to Hong Kong and only remembered when I was there a month ago.

I keep it as empty as I can but still take it out of my pocket when sitting at my desk all day.

I stopped using my money clip because the magnets in it kept fucking with my credit cards. If I need to go slim for fancy clothes, I just pocket what I need. I think I need to get a new money clip without magnets.

Jonnymax 06-14-2009 02:02 PM

I switched to the credit-card pocket/money clip many years back, and it is wonderful. Now it is pretty beat up and in need of replacing, and I cant seem to find many out there, let alone one I like. Any suggestions from fellow TFPers?

I use a money clip, no magnets. Everything here is done with cash. Most places don't take a card.

You beat me to the punch with this mention. It's really thin and holds everything I need. When I have two bulges in my pants, women get confused. Now the world makes sense again.

Yuan RMB is a bit bigger than dollars though, so they kinda peek out the top.

.......... 06-15-2009 02:28 AM

I have never liked bulky wallets and in my never ending quest to find a cleaner more efficient way to carry shit, I found a slimclip. Part wallet part money clip. Works great for me. I am a single fold large denomination on the outside guy when I have cash. Usually its plastic first and there are 2 different cards I use frequently and both are easy to access. Really likin my slimclip and I have had it almost a year.

fiatguy85 06-15-2009 10:28 PM

I recently switched to a slim money clip, which I used to force myself to take out all of the crap I really didn't need in a wallet anyway. I like the simplification and I rarely carry cash anyway. When I do it is well managed with big bills on the outside and smaller inside of that.

THGL 06-16-2009 05:10 AM

I use the Storus money clip.
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/328...neyclipcar.gif

This thing takes care of the "what do I do with my credit cards/license?" folks.

Hard8s 07-03-2009 12:01 PM

I use a hinged clip, put the drivers license, ATM card, credit cards, etc in between with the money folded around. I leave the rest of my wallet in the glove compartment of my truck. You would be amazed at what little you actually need to carry around.

biznatch 07-15-2009 11:10 AM

Since I started work at a restaurant, I take a half empty pack of cigarettes, fold my money twice, and stuff it in there. It allows me to keep my money and cigarettes in one handy box, and lets me take not too many cigarettes, which is also good. I can also store business cards, a debit card, using the cigarettes as a separator, and the cellophane around the pack technically could let me put a few coins there.
My friends say it makes me look like a drug dealer, but I don't care much. Better than lugging my huge wallet around.
