I have a 125 gallon salt water with a trickle down filter system (built into a 70 gallon )...I have had salt water for over 15 years and find that once you have the system cycled and keep to the basics they are little trouble.
1) Cycle slowly 2) Start with hardy varieties first 3) Do not overpopulate the more water per animal the better...Fish Grow 4) Learn what animals can co-habitate 5) keep the specific gravity a little lower (prevents parasites) 6) Sea Water seldom gets warmer then 70 degrees 7) Buy the biggest tank you can get 8) Decide if you want pretty fish or a "Reef Tank" (they do not mix well) 9) Remember that salt water fish absorb nutriments and fresh water thru their skin...Water changes are essential (I do about Five gallons every month) 10) Keep your tanks as "natural" as possible...Do not medicate unless you hava a seperate "hospital Tank" 11) the Ocean seldom changes its chemical makeup. Salt water Animals are beautiful...I have some that are 10 years old and doing just fine...The biggest problem is always introducing a new animal and hoping it is desease free and will not upset the balance of the existing tank...My tank is basically a "fish tank" I do have some live coral (leathers etc) that are very hardy and do not require a special lighting system, also some fish like angels eat live corals, BTW, I do have a Purple Tang and they love Romaine Lettuce...Have Fun! |
