Squirrels picking at leaves

We have a bonsai style japanese maple, and lately the squirrels have been picking at the newly-bloomed leaves, making them fall off. Is there anything we can do to keep them away?

One thing to do is to try to deter them by giving them their own food. A small feeder of their own might grab their interest, and is commonly done to keep them away from bird feeders.

They also sell powdered fox urine which is supposed to deter them, but I'm not sure as to just how effective it is.

I find my .22 highly effective. Also the golden retriever gets results.

If you can find it, fox urine works, I used it to keep tree rats out of the attic before.

I think I might prefer the squirrels.

Ok, hurting them is out of the question. That is like hurting myself.
No thank you.

And we give them squirrel food every day.

They seem to just be taking advantage and taking over! lol

Fox urine....oh, my....I don't think I'm that desperate.............

I do embrace them, don't hate 'em. Just don't ruin our expensive tree!

^^^ I love those squirrels, their our pets here. We have a big dog, but he's staying at my folks' house because there is no room here. I don't want to "scare" them off, but just find a way to prevent them from hacking at our tree.

well sounds like your only option is to make some kind of box to put the bonsai tree in... buy a bunch of 1x2s and nail them into a cube and cover the 5 sides...

real determined squirrels would prolly chew thru it pretty quick... but if these ones have another food source more readily available they might not bother...

Sometimes cats love to hunt squirrels, sometimes they might harm them and it's funny watch a cat chase down a squirrel

the tree needs light, but thanks for the suggestion, we feed the squirrels all the time, and they are our little friends. we don't want them to go away.
