I R SMART

Mk, So I was over at another forum and someone was bashing on another guy for calling more than one person a jackass. The guy using the sentence spelled it Jackasses (makes since to me) but guy # 2 insist he is wrong... so I called him a smart ass and told him to shut his yapper.

Anyway, would the plural for Jackass be jackasses?

I think the more important question is how stupid is your position if you're forced to fall back on questioning somebody's use of the word jackass?

I dont know. But last night i was asking my GF what would you call more than one cactus. Would it be cactuses or cactii? It was too similar to leave with the one word up for questioning. Anyone know?

actually, both cacti and cactuses are grammatically correct. most english teachers/professors not on the curve maintain that it's only cacti, but they are wrong.

If there's more than one jackass in the house it means there are several jackasses present.

Merriam Webster:
"plural cac·ti /-"tI, -(")tE/; or cac·tus·es also cactus"

Oxford English Dictionary:
"pl. cacti /kakti/ or cactuses"

I would go with "Jacks of Ass", Just sounds more insulting.

"Truly, you are a couple Jacks of Ass".

The plural of "ass" is "asses". Therefore, the plural of "jackass" is "jackasses". Simple as that. No dictionaries necessary.

Surely a 'Jackass' would not mean a 'Jack of Ass', but an 'Ass of Jack'. This would make the plural 'Asses of Jack'. Since a single 'Jack' has only one 'Ass', the term is rendered meaningless. As such, we should use 'fuckwits' instead (not to be confused with the verb of the same spelling.)

btw 'Jackasses is fine'

Not quite true. The plural of mouse is mice, but the plural of computer mouse is computer mouses. The plural of goose is geese, the plural of mongoose is mongooses. English rule is that with a borrowed word, all funny endings revert to default.

But the default plural suffix for words ending in 's' is 'es'. Unless you want to revert to the global default and spell it 'Jackasss'. I like that. It sounds more threatening when you say it.

btw the plural of 'computer mouse' is 'computers's meeces'
