pharmacy questions

I am taking a pharmacy calc class and am wondering if anyone still uses drams or grains today or if the conversions from scruples to apothecary pounds are worth while to remeber after this class is over

Anything Ive ever seen in my friend's textbooks is in CCs. I've never even seen a passing mention of scruples or grains..

Being in pharmacy school, I was forced to learn these. I have worked as an intern in a pharmacy for over 2 years now and in that time I have seen ONE prescription written in other than the international system. It was for a "5 grain" asparin, which is just the standard 325 mg dose. They also taught us in school that although we need to learn it, it's all pretty much obsolete.

Honestly, I've already forgotten it

Grains are still used in environmental engineering/air pollution, when measuring particulate emissions. Many regulations specify particulate matter emisison limits in terms of "grains per dry standard cubic foot".

Really? That suprises me I would have thought that the EPA and all that would have switched over to the SI system by now. Surely other countries that use the metric system don't use those units?

Hec, I work in the hospital setting (in the US) and can assure you that you can forget all about drams, grains and scruples!

I, like the VitaminH, have only seen grain used once...also for ASA.
