Any advice for making built in shelves

I'm looking for advice or web sites that have info on making a wall unit book shelf. What kind of wood to use, etc., and even design plans would be great. I've got all these tools I need to put to use.

Not plans, but this page has some good info on materials and design specs.

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's or even Amazon for good books/magazines on the topic.

Are you trying to just build a Free standing book shelf or build them into a wall? If you are going to build them into the wall, then I recommend also going to Lowe's or Home Depot for help.

The Family Handyman Magazine has had some great bookcases. If you're looking for that custom built-in look on a large wall, you may want to peruse the pages. Also very detailed step by step instructions. I built a huge Oak bookcase that spanned an entire room from thier plans and everyone thinks it was professionally done. Let me know if you want some specific issue numbers or dates or pics of the bookcase

If you are working without alot of other tools, I would recommend getting a Kreg Pocket Hole jig. You can get a striped down version at Lowes pretty cheap in the tool corral. It will allow you to make incredibly strong shelves without having to do any fancy joinery. I use one of their bigger models with my cabinetry business and it really speeds up those "less expensive" projects.

Another "single tool" recommendation is the router. Fixed shelves can be placed in shop made rabbets, and vertical rabbets can be made to accomodate metal stips for adjustable shelf requirements.

If your project will be painted, look for a lumber yard that carries pieced plank. I've used poplar PP for some bookcase units that I fabricated in shop and field assembled/installed.
