How many pennies fit in a 5 gallon jug?
I've been saving pennies in an old 5 gallon water jug for a long long time. Well, it's almost filled and I'm too lazy to count the pennies. So how much money have I got? I'm guessing around $350.
If I were to empty it, would it be worth sorting out all the old wheat pennies? There's probably dozens of them, but I don't know if they have any value. |

volume = .360 cm3
3785 cm3 per gallon 19,000 cm3 per 5 gallons therefore, you have a theoretical limit of $525 dollars in that thing, supposing there is no air in it. multiply by about .7 (the porosity of a dense clay) and you have about $360. so i guess i agree w/ U.

I would estimate you have around 300 pennies in that thing.
The above calculations are jus too number heavy to disagree with So I'll just nod in agreement. I wish i had the self disipline to safe all my chagne i usually just toss it around my house and forget about it. |

why are some of you talking about 300 pennies?
do you really mean 300 physical pennies? in a 5 gallon jug? (ur excused if metric is all you know...) 300 pennies is $3.00. one roll of pennies is 50¢ x 6 = 300 pennies. visualise the volume. ok, clear now? sorry i don't mean to condescend..but...hellooo, anyone home? |

i agree - weigh 100 pennies, weigh the jug, divide, now you have whole dollar result. simple...
the jug will throw you over by a couple of bucks, but who cares? this is just an estimate, right? or you could do water displacement archamedies (sp?) style... that's a bit extreme, though...

Weighing the jug and pennies would be a good method, but the jug is glass and I don't know how much it weights alone (I guess I'd have to empty it). Water displacement is another good idea, but then I'd have over 30,000 wet pennies |

and a 5-gallon water jug weighs 13 pounds: and a roll of pennies weighs 4.5 ounces.

All I have is the image of Homer slapping an address on his water jug of change and struggling it out to the mailbox, only to drop it into the ground. Peering into the hole he whines "Hello? China? Little help?"

I'd guess between $300 to $325 as well. I filled a container almost that size, and ended up rolling about $275. The pain in the arse was that the bank wouldn't take it without having it rolled first, and then when I rolled it and brought it in, they broke open the rolls to make sure they were all real. |

Assuming the average penis is 6 inches long with a diameter of 1 1/2 inches, that's a volume of about 42 in^3.
18,927 cm^3 in 5 gals 688cm^c in 18,927cm^3 means you could fit 27 penises into a 5 gallon jug. But you would have to stack them just right. |

I am about half way through filling a 5 gallon jug with all my loose change. Looking at the contents and reading this thread, I'll say it should be several thousand dollars worth by the time it's full, and we'll head off to Disney World!!
(after sorting change for 3 months, there is NO way in hell I'm going to pay Coinstar 11% of my money)

Avoid Coinstar. They take 8.9% (89¢ out of $10) of what they count plus the coins that get into the machine without being counted (usually due to overfilling the fill chamber). If you have $300, they'll be getting $26.70 of it. Anyone whose time is so valuable that this is a bargain isn't someone who would need to accumulate the coins to begin with.

Volume of a roll of pennies = pi x r x r x h = 3.14 x .375" x .375" x 2.875" = 1.271 cu. in.
5 gallons = 0.668 cu. ft. or (x 1728) 1,154 cu. in. 1,154 / 1.271 = 908 rolls of pennies; worth $454; and weighing (@4.5 oz. ea.) 255 lbs. Again, that's not accounting for any air in between the pennies, so I'd say $300 worth is in the realm of probability. If you know what the empty jug weighs, you could weigh it; subtract the empty weight; and find the number of rolls (4.5 oz.) at 50 cents each.

Bank of America has a machine that sorts and counts coins FREE.
It prints out a receipt that you give to a teller and get bills..it may take a while to feed all those coins however..and be careful as some coins will jam the machine...then you wait till it gets fixed. |

Back in my bartending days, I used to take a 1-gallon jar to my bank on a regular basis - there were no machines in grocery stores back then - and they charged me 4%. It usually netted me $350-$400 each visit, but very few of them were pennies (or quarters - those I rolled myself and saved the 4%).
