Hmmm, I'm a percussionist, so I've played on these instruments.

But make one?

Not to dash your hopes, but I think it'd be next to impossible to make a play-worthy afro-percussion instrument without any previous experience.

Of course, I suppose you've gotta start somewhere if you're interested in that sort of thing!

I would suggest searching around on http://www.everything2.com as they have many nodes concerning "make your own" type things.

Im a percussionsit, and the best I can do is make drumsets. Maybe there is a shell you can buy for making them? (shell is wooden part)

Everything's cool.
I just found out that one of my boys has a huge lathe and thanks to last fall's hurricane we've got lots of mayterial, mostly water oak. So we're gonna turn down some Djembe and Zarb (a wooden doumbek) shells!
now I just need ti find raw goat skins...

Goat isn't necessary. If you hunt, you can shave a deer before you skin it and use that.
