I was talking to a professor about this and the discussion turned to the fact that women wear coverings from head to toe in an attempt to keep men from sinning. the reasoning is that if a man sees the flesh of a woman, he will be tempted by "impure" thoughts and be apt to commit a "sinful" act. and with that, my two cents are up...

I know this much its not a religious requirement but a cultural one a close friend of mine has read the entire quran and said no where does it require the use of a burqa

opentocomments is right, it IS purely a social thing not a religious requirement at all. Have to say, if I was a Muslim I would definitely want to be a guy not a girl !!!
