I was wondering, due to the amount of knowlege to be found on this forum, and quality discourse, what peoples education is.

Note: if you are in progress in any of these, please mark it. For instance if you are working on a Bachelors Degree right now after High School, please mark Bachelors Degree, not High School.

I am working on a Computer Science Degree (BS), almost halfway through.

Working on a BA in broadcasting/electronic media studies. Should be graduating in the next year (hopefully).

Going for a BS in computer science. Just started, so I've got quite a way to go.

Studying for a BS in Computer Science, but I will probably do further studies after that.

Have my Masters plus credits towards a second.

When things settle down, I may go back for more. No such thing as being too educated.

I did a Health science degree. Now Im doing a psychology degree. I have a thing for knowledge.

Where is the Associate's Degree Option? I currently have an A.A.S. and will receive my Bachelor of Science Degree in December.

since your working on your BS, count yourself in the bachelor's category, as that is what you are closest to achieving..

Bachelors in Economics for me. Taken a few courses towards my MBA but haven't found it too fulfilling/interesting.

Fuck college. I got fed up with it and dropped out last year; I'm 21 now. Found out I learn a lot more from real life and some good literature (science and philosophy are favorites of mine) than any of my bullshit college courses. Oh, and I'm better off than my college-educated parents doing work I enjoy more, too. Anyone who says you need college in order to get anywhere in life is full of shit. Hard work, independence, skill, and knowing the people who want to help you out vs. those who want to fuck you over are about 99% of what you need.

Absolutely true. College just means that for a short span of time a student did what was required to get a degree. There are plenty of extremely intelligent and successful people who never went to college.

By the same token, college has provided the confidence, knowledge, and skills to a lot of people to achieve great things.

College is more useful for some people while real-life experience is more useful for others.

The sad thing is, most of society requires college now-a-days. We wont even look at anyone who doesn't have some sort of college degree.

For what I wanted to do, tech school was plenty. I'm an industrial mechanic, and I love it.

BA in Lit. The full title is actually specific enough to give away exactly what college I graduated from at what university, but I won't share that since that seems to be how everyone else responded anyway :).

The argument that college isn't necessary because a few rich and famous folks didn't get a college education seems to me to be a way to justify avoiding the time, effort and cost of college.

For every Bill Gates, there's gotta be 100 CEO's making serious cash. Gates is an example of the exception to the rule.

A few rich and famous folks? Get a clue. There are tons of people who have done extremely well for themselves without ever going to college. If you think college is for everyone then I suspect you have not been exposed to a great many people.

In case you missed the point to my post, college does not guarantee success any more than not going to college guarantees failure.

Weight-lifting does not guarantee strength any more than atrophy guarantees weakness, right?

As to my level of exposure to a "great many people", I've had, and continue to have, plenty.

It's complete nonsense to believe that a person has an equal chance of making a $100K+ salary with or without a college education.

I assist clients in, among other things, buying and selling businesses, both privately- and publicly-owned. In my experience there ARE people who are successful with just a high school diploma. It is also my experience that there are MANY MORE successful people who have post-high school educations.

College, I agree, is not for everyone.

I guess it depends on how you define success. I never mentioned anything about the chances of someone making a $100k a year. And given that the vast majority of people do not achieve this level of earning, I would submit that the odds aren't that much different between college grads and non-college grads. I know of many people who have started their own businesses and become very successful without ever graduating from college.

But I digress. As you've taken my original post completely out of context. Read the post I was responding to and you may understand my point a bit better. That post said that anyone that says you NEED college to do well is full of shit. That is an absolutely true statement. Anyone who would like to improve their odds of doing well (as your point seems to be) would do well to educate themselves. Whether that's through a college curriculum or some other method is obviously up to them.

Just as there are vastly different ways of learning, there are vastly different curriculums out there. Certainly someone that goes through a degree factory and never learns anything is probably worse off than someone who starts their own business out of high school and learns what they need to survive.

But that's just me. You seem to see anyone that doesn't go to college as someone that wants to avoid the work involved. Certainly some feel that way. Others recognize that they do not learn well in that environment and choose to avoid it.

BS in Electrical Engineering. Master's someday, but I'd like my next step to be getting a PE (Professional Engineer) license.

I've got a Bachelor in Music and am trying to get the Masters degree now. But you know, I would characterize my school (Juilliard) more as a trade school, even though we are accredited and offer degrees. It is definitely the kind of place where what you can do counts for more than what you know - and I think that is very appropriate here.
