Cleaning inside an antique hip-flask.
 

I just bought an antique silver hip-flask from a pawn shop. It looks cool as fuck and will be my new essential accesory.

Trouble is it has some funky smells coming out of it. I've no idea when it was last used. I was about to pour some diluted household bleach in there, then I stopped myself and decided to take some advice.

So, anybody know how to clean the insides of a funky hip-flask?

It's silver plated by the way, not solid silver.

I would go with the diluted bleach and then rinse it out with water... a lot.

That should do it.

Oh, and be sure whatever you drink from the flask is 100 proof or better. May not kill all the germs, but after a few pulls from the flask, you won't really care.

I'd also throw some sand in it with some water and shake the hell out of it. It won't be silver plated on the inside so don't worry about damaging the silver.

I would say ammonia as according to the wonderous internet it can do more things than Jesus. That and I use it to clean stuff all the time.

I would NEVER use bleach or ammonia on a flask. By doing so, you run the risk of damaging it. I would suggest warm water, baking soda, and some uncooked rice put this combo into the flask and shake well. If that doesn't do the trick try some crushed ice, salt and lemon juice, then shake well.

This looks like the safest option. If this doesn't work, then I'll try the bleach.

You could always try Rubbing Alcohol. It should also kill stuff inside. Then be sure to rinse it out with some boiling water!

Plated silver. Not much you can do. Mild soap is yer only option.

I wouldnt drink out of it thou. Number #1 is that it is plated.

I am a Jeweler. So thats my knowlegde. PLus if it is Antique. I wouldnt drink out of it.

i have been looking for a hip flask. I almost bought a cool old one from an antique store but decided not to because of the smell onthe inside. I have to say they simply dont make them like they used to, i have searched onlinea dn offline and can only seem to find flasks created by the same 4 or 5 manufacturers.

The baking soda will work .
