I don't know how people confuses they're/their/there. Actually, for me, I think I remembered it at first by saying: their has an 'i' in it, which looks like a person, which must mean it's something to do with people!
They're is just they are, how hard is that? It's like filling in the blanks! I also hate people who say thin*g/k* instead of thing. I've noticed Simon Cowell does this... Affect vs. Effect... Geez, you don't even pronounce them the same way. And this is something I do that drives one of my friends crazy. I have a habit of saying bought when I mean brought, I do that on purpose sometimes just to piss her off... |

I just did my SAT II Writing test recently, and I was faced with the arduous task of assimilating all my high school grammar notes to deal with all the clauses, subject verb agreement cases, exceptions, the list goes on...
The one thing that I've never been able to handle is the following type of sentence: "Walking down the staircase drenched in sweat, my bag felt heavy." English grammer = nightmare |

Otherwise the staircase is drenched in sweat. I hate it when people pluralize everything with an apostrophe. Even a simple word such as "ball" becomes "ball's"! And I've made a resolution. Whenever I'm not writing something that will be marked for perfect grammar, I'm using the British style of quotes, where punctuation goes outside the quote mark. Makes much more sense. |

Most of my peeves have been shot, kicked, and buried above. I'll happily excavate my favorites for additional abuse:
"An historic" "I could care less" Aagh! Then the "newbie 90's" double plurals: softwares, firmwares, et al. Mixups: infer/imply, then/than, further/farther, the "there's", the terrible "to's". Wood it b eezeur 2 giv n? |
