Pulling up an old azalea
 

Does anyone have any advice for removing 2 old azalea bushes from the front of my home?

We just bought the house, so I'm not sure of their age, but they are huge. I've trimmed all the branches down to nubs and have started cutting through some of the main roots which are woody and a couple of inches thick.

Is there an easier way?

If he's got azaleas in his yard, he's in the South.

Though I've lived in the south my whole life, I'm what a REAL southerner would refer to as a "city boy."

I have thought about putting a wench on the front of my Kia though.

attach the chain to the FRAME of the truck, not the bumper - so you don't do damage. You might need a strong "web strap" to attach to the stump. You could also rent a "comealong" from your hardware store or rental center and use that to pull it out. Attach the other end to a strong tree or vehicle, etc.

You could just use roundup to poision them. Then in a few months when they have dried up set them on fire:)

If you do try and pull it out with a truck be wairy of the stump launching itself into the back of your vehicle, when it finally lets go. Wetting the ground should make it a little easier.

No way...I live in Wa state: lots and lots of Azaleas and everygreens up here. Its the evergreen state, dontcha know? Well, i really dont know why youre doing that, but be careful. I hacked through some junipers with a pickax, chopping roots, chewing thr ground. A few months later, a locator came by to locate for some other landscaping work: I found out I was hacking the ground just inches from the gas line.

Call before you dig! Really!

Anyway, yeah, soak the ground.

Finally got them both up. The soaking did the trick, though it was still a backbreaking job.
