How to: Make Shirt Designs/ Make or alter clothing

There are some guys that make shirts that look like the slogans are just spray painted on white shirts. (the slogans are verses of songs).

Also I saw a simialr in this month's issue of Esquire. The guy had a button down oxford shirt with "Faith," "Hope," and etc etc on it. It looked like it has been sprayed on with spray paint (and a styncil).

How does one do this?

Is it washer dryer safe?

Any ideas on altering clothing. I like the alternative/ DIY/ punk look.

I look at stuff in the stores and say to myself that I could do much better cheaper, if I only new how.

Also, I'm a slender guy (that will help on the fassion tips).

Buy some medium thick posterboard at an art store. You can cut out the stencil with an xacto knife. Buy some decent quality spraypaint--krylon seems to be the best. It should last for a while on a shirt before it fades in the laundry. remember to wash inside out.

I like doing this with shrits I buy at the goodwill. Buy some interesting shirts and spraypaint a cool stencil on them. For stencil ideas, look in magazines and try cutting out the shadows from a portrait. color through what you have cut out on a blank sheet of paper and see how it looks. if it looks ok, enlarge it on a copier.

ive tried spraypainting shirts before.. i generally find if you stencil and then use a roller with some fabric paint it works pretty nicely.
(make sure you put something like thick cardboard inside of it before rolling)

Thanks guys so much. I look forward to doing this.

Do you ever have trouble with them in the wash?
