				Sweet bottomed fruit

No, this isn't a gay thread.

I am very lucky to live in an area that has many orchards nearby. It's harvest time for peaches and they are amazing. One thing I've noticed is peaches and apples are sweeter on the bottom than on the top. I haven't notice this with other fruit, but my fruit choices are pretty limited. So, can anyone tell me why apples and peaches taste sweeter on the bottom half of the fruit than on the top half? Is fructose heavier than the rest of the 'fluids' in a fruit?

my guess is when a fruit hangs on a tree, the juices in the fruit will tend to be more concentrated at the bottom than the top due to gravity, and greater juice concentration = sweeter bottom?

However it is simply a hypothesis.

I have heard that squash tends to be best at the top. The theory is that the top of the squash is where the growth is. And squash gets sour, not sweet, as it ages.

Perhaps with fruit the sections that age (the bottom?) have higher sugar levels than those newer (higher up) sections? Or perhaps I'm wrong...

Maybe the fruit towards the top of the tree gets more sun leeching out some of the moisture and sugars, thereby making the fruit on the bottom seem sweeter than the fruit on the top of the tree.
