Species of the week...
I will try to put an interesting animal species up here each week if there is any interest. Those of you out west will probably already know about this, but the rest of the world may not...
Pronghorn Antelope (Antilocapra americana) The pronghorn is actually not an antelope; it is in the bovine family, though this is still disputed by some. Its habitat is the western plains of North America. Pronghorn are the only animals on the planet that shed their horns each years, as if they were antlers. Pronghorn are the fastest animals in North America. I can run at speeds up to 60mph. As no predators can run this fast, it is theorized that the North American Cheetah was a predator for this species thousands of years ago, adapting it to high speeds. Though Pronghorn are not endangered, some of there subspecies are. Sonoran Pronghorn live in the sonoran desert habitat of Arizona and Mexico, there are currently less than 500 individuals. The Peninsular Pronghorn sub-species lives only in the Vizcaíno Desert of Baja, California. Less than 150 individuals are suspected to exist in the wild. |

I propose Centipede.
After a recent outbreak in my damp-ass basement I learned some very interesting things about them. Strange little creatures. I'll let next week bring the surprises. (hint: they are not in the phylum you would l think). -bear
