crawfish/crawdads in lawn

I read the lawn and bug threads, but this is sort of a diferent problem. There's a part of our back yard that drains poorly, and is infested with these critters. I originally wanted to do the right thing, spreading cedar chips and sand, but that did not work. I even sat out there with bacon on a string one night. I resorted to trying mothballs in the holes, but they were pushed out. Someone from A&M (an entemology prof.) said there is nothing on the market approved for crawfish, but off the record I could try Sevin, an insecticide. It worked for a while, but they are back. They burrow under the grass, and make the ground lumpy, almost hilly, and the little chimneys pop up after every rain.

I know it sounds like a bad comedy movie, and that there's little hope of someone having dealt with this before, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Have you thought about removing the water? That will definitely clear up your mudbug problem. French drains work wonders.

I say make a cajun restaurant. Mmmmm Gumbo.

catch em and have a crawfish boil

yum yum..

or sell em to neighberhood kids as pets...

the only reliable way to get rid of them is to get rid of the water...

Just eat the damn things. They're like little lobsters. Yum.

clavus 07-25-2003 07:58 PM

mmmmm!

Parasite infested bottom-feeders! Yummy.

Sorry. I used to devour these things. Then I had the misfortune of discovering the vast array of horrifying creatures that spend part of their life-cylce in these things. Now I'd rather eat a turd.

Here's my solution. Get one of those rollers they use for compacting dirt. Once a week, roll that sucker over your lawn. SMOOSH!

I'd think you'd be surprised about what lives in the rest of your food, and even the parasites that hang out in us. Just cook 'em thoroughly, and you'll be fine.

Sump pump the water out.

bobw 08-01-2003 12:34 PM

I'll go with the obvious... boil them and eat them

gonadman 08-08-2003 07:28 PM

OK, remove one prong on an extension plug. Cut the other end off and wrap the opposite wire around a long insulated screwdriver. Plug it in, then stick the screwdriver in the ground and watch those suckers pop out of the ground- Already Cooked!!

(Disclaimer-please don't take any of my sarcasm seriously:))

Exactly. Cow parasites are particularly fun. Besides, I never heard of anyone getting E-Coli or Mad Cow from a crawdad.

I thought crawfish/crawdads lived in streams underwater. You have them living in your yard?

Jasmar 08-17-2003 04:20 PM

whenever you catch one kill it and leave it as a reminder to others. Thats how I got rid of ants in my house

That's pretty common in the south actually.

replte2 08-18-2003 04:34 PM

I just moved from Ohio to Louisiana and I know what CREWSOR means. Up north you only find them in ponds and streams, down South you find them anywere it is wet.

Surrender that part of your yard to the water. Plant something that likes wet feet. like iris, canna lily, or cypress trees.

Why is it so bad to have crawfish? If they are living there, the water is not far from the surface. if you have a small yard and must use that portion, then you are going to have to install a french drain or something.
