Got a speech on Monday

Hey-
Got a one point policy speech due on Monday, this is a persuasion speech. I can't think of shit to present on, any ideas would be helpful.

ex of topics: Why college athletes should be paid a stipend
from their school.

Why we shouldn't have gone to war with Iraq.

BrinlyNoya 07-22-2003 08:47 PM

thats really weird.. I'm in a public speaking class right now and I heard a speech about both those topics...

I did mine on why fast food is bad...like not just the "it makes you fat" stuff, I talked about the working conditions of FF employees, the bad stuff it does to the body, and how horribly unsanitary it is.

Topics I like are:
the negatives of world peace
the need for better regulation of legal drugs (caffeine, alcohol, tobacco)
Why America is hypocritical of its own values. (ex. we have laws against monopolies, but America has a huge monopoly over the world markets in an awful lot of things.)
and just about anything related to Education Reform.

I just don't like the college athlete one because, my lil sister is a college athlete, and I think they get spoiled enough as it is. If kids that can dribble a basket ball should get extra money, so should kids that can get a perfect 4.0 and give back to their community.

how about removing the 12% soc security tax and replacing it with a national sales tax?

badflsh 07-22-2003 11:09 PM

I think I did mine on land mines. There are many countries that have a ton of old land mines all over the place because it is so expensive to find and dispose of them all. Just find some of the organizations supporting cleanup efforts and persuade people to support the organizations. The thing about this subject is that it makes it really easy to make very vivid examples and to give statistics that stick in people’s heads because they are so horrible.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll let you all know what i picked as my topic.

i know i'm late, but how about cops who hide behind stop signs.

^^im thinking someone got a ticket, lol

Let us know how this goes.

In debate competitions, you are randomly assigned pro or con position to argue. Arguing against landmines seems way too easy. Can you come up with a good argument in favor of landmines?

onetime2 08-07-2003 11:14 AM

How about why actors/actresses should not be given free press coverage for their political agendas?

cetacean 08-07-2003 02:48 PM

Too late but, legalizing IT.

I think argueing to ensure college athletes are 'compensated' is a no brainer.

Those sports generate SO MUCH money for everyone but the athletes. It's like slave labor, only using extremely talented athletes.

perhaps you could argue for the striping of corprate charters from corps that seriously abuse the law. (MCI comes to mind, they did it again just this month)

actually, that's a topic that could be easily debated. not every college sport brings in a lot of money. swimmers, golfers, any student athlete that isn't in a big money sport like basket ball, foot ball, and hockey put in just as many hours, but their sports don't bring in much revenue.

Concur. Those that do however, have an unlimited pool of slave labor to pull from (well not unlimted...but you get my point).

Some get VERY rich off of college athletics...and it's not the athletes that sell the tickets or create the bidding wars for the broadcast rights. To me it's unconscionable that the athletes are not compensated.

well, the only part i won't agree with is the "unconscionable that they aren't compensated." i went to U of Mich, so I know about how much money they generate. i also knew some people on the football team, and they get "compensated" more than most people know. they get a lot of free clothes from sponsers, many get living stipends. if i remember correctly (4-5 years ago) one of the guys on the team told me that he got something like $400 a month stipend to go along with his scholorship that covered full tuition. now for a college student, that's a hell of a lot to live off of. so they don't "need" it. whether or not they should get more, be salaried even, i'm not one to say. i'm pretty ambivelent on the subject.
