Got a speech on Monday
Hey-
Got a one point policy speech due on Monday, this is a persuasion speech. I can't think of shit to present on, any ideas would be helpful. ex of topics: Why college athletes should be paid a stipend from their school. Why we shouldn't have gone to war with Iraq.

thats really weird.. I'm in a public speaking class right now and I heard a speech about both those topics...
I did mine on why fast food is bad...like not just the "it makes you fat" stuff, I talked about the working conditions of FF employees, the bad stuff it does to the body, and how horribly unsanitary it is. Topics I like are: the negatives of world peace the need for better regulation of legal drugs (caffeine, alcohol, tobacco) Why America is hypocritical of its own values. (ex. we have laws against monopolies, but America has a huge monopoly over the world markets in an awful lot of things.) and just about anything related to Education Reform. I just don't like the college athlete one because, my lil sister is a college athlete, and I think they get spoiled enough as it is. If kids that can dribble a basket ball should get extra money, so should kids that can get a perfect 4.0 and give back to their community. |

I think I did mine on land mines. There are many countries that have a ton of old land mines all over the place because it is so expensive to find and dispose of them all. Just find some of the organizations supporting cleanup efforts and persuade people to support the organizations. The thing about this subject is that it makes it really easy to make very vivid examples and to give statistics that stick in people’s heads because they are so horrible.

I think argueing to ensure college athletes are 'compensated' is a no brainer.
Those sports generate SO MUCH money for everyone but the athletes. It's like slave labor, only using extremely talented athletes.

perhaps you could argue for the striping of corprate charters from corps that seriously abuse the law. (MCI comes to mind, they did it again just this month)

Some get VERY rich off of college athletics...and it's not the athletes that sell the tickets or create the bidding wars for the broadcast rights. To me it's unconscionable that the athletes are not compensated. -bear |
