Justice: What's The Right Thing To Do?
Trailer:
Episode 1 I was reading the NYTimes yesterday and encountered this article. This series will be broadcast on PBS. It is a pretty high quality lecture series from what I can tell from the production values and a friend at WGBH. Many of the passionate politics discussions all hinge on some moral question and value similar to these posited by the professor. Quote:

Will the people be made aware that it seems nearly all if not all the evidence would suggest that torture simply doesn't work? I know I probably sound like a broken record because I've been saying this for at least 4 years, but that should probably factor in to the question of justice. Morality/ethics aside, of course.
Otherwise, it's a brilliant idea. Justice isn't necessarily an easy thing to teach/learn and people need as much help as they can get. |

The point of the discussions isn't to hash out the same arguments but to push and pull the argument into a place were one can actually see where moral and value boundaries exist and how to think critically about them.

I may like this series too, depending on the teachings. I like the thinking of it, the pulling apart and looking anew.
I have said for many years that I would like to teach a civics class to middle/high schoolers, which of course would include ethics.

/threadjack Anyway, there are plenty of justice issues that can be pulled from the headlines and real life that would probably be very good to illustrate issues of justice. I look forward to hearing them. |

I'm sure all you smart folk know these theories better than I.
However, shall we start with....Utilitarianism? Torture 1 baby (the terrorist's) and we save 100,000 innocent lives? What about the other theories? (Means to an end, social contract...) |

There's lots of further reading and discussion from the lectures. This is further reading for Ep2.
Justice with Michael Sandel - J.S. Mill, Utilitarianism (1863) It's a long read and I'm trying very hard to understand all that I'm reading. It will take some time to digest.
