You're on your own, kid....

dlish 07-22-2011 06:55 AM

Oh great guru, some of your countrymen have been slandering you, questioning your infallibility, and telling us that you're wrong

what will you do to quell those nasty rumours, oh great one?

Baraka_Guru 07-22-2011 07:19 AM

These people try to fade me
These people try to fade me

But I wouldn't acknowledge 'em even if you paid me....

dlish 07-22-2011 07:21 AM

do you do Opera?

Baraka_Guru 07-22-2011 07:54 AM

I've tried Opera, yes.

But I didn't like it, so I switched to Firefox from Internet Explorer instead. I used Firefox for several years up until recently when I switched to Chrome (which, by the by, I highly recommend).

"canceled" or "cancelled"?

Cancelled, unless you are a part of the former British colony the United States of America.

Known colloquially as "the USA," this former colony has participated in a subtle yet noticeable degradation of the Queen's (aka Oxford) English. Much of this, however, has lost its significance with the advent of Internet slang and the "language" of text messaging, the majority of which was driven by these former colonists.

The_Jazz 07-22-2011 08:37 AM

Um, Mr. Guru sir? It's "cancelled" on both sides of the border. Just like the show "Alf".

dlish 07-22-2011 08:42 AM

flip flops or thongs?

Here, you are referring to those among the former colonists who choose to deviate from the norm. These "Loyalists" will often opt to use double-Ls, as well as perhaps "-our" over "-or" and/or "-re" over "-er." However, it is rare for them to abide by the sensible metric system, as they cling deserately to that horrific imperial system.

Perpetual syndication is a kind of sainthood for cancelled television programs. Terrible example.

Thongs, clearly. I don't really have a "thing" for feet. It's not my bag.

I asked because my classmate's Droid phone kept autocorrecting it to "canceled" and there was a big debate.

Absolutely horrific: both the occurrence (lackadaisical programming) and the debate (of which there is none).

noodle 07-22-2011 10:46 AM

They challenged me over a phone. Pffft.

What do you think of the horrible fate that befell Alf? Reference

I feel it is a reflection of the violence and suffering that is innate in our natures and rife in our societies. It demonstrates how we as individuals must take responsibility for our fates and to make it a priority to overcome our own suffering.

I think the series provides a great moral lesson for young minds. I recommend it to parents everywhere. Though I would suggest skipping the bulk of the 100 or so episodes and merely watching the series premiere and finale/TV movie.

Why am I plagued with HTTP 500 errors on TFP 5.0?

Why does the alcohol magnify the stupidity at such an exponential level?

Internet Explorer.

(Tsk tsk, btw :shakehead:)

This is a common misconception. Alcohol actually removes the inhibitions of one's true intelligence. It's an evolutionary mechanism that we hide this intelligence through pretense and acting. Alcohol removes the anxieties we have over protecting our true selves. It allows us to be who we truly are.

Alcohol is a liberating thing.

Do not be ashamed of your experiences with this beautiful celestial draft, for it would mean being ashamed of liberation.

noodle 07-22-2011 06:16 PM

Yes, Stella is a lovely gift to mankind.
However, I still think it magnifies something.
But I will not disagree with the Guru tonight, impaired as my judgement may be.
I guess running IE 6 on the laptop contributes, eh?

Martian 07-22-2011 07:43 PM

Even Microsoft tells you not to run IE 6 now.

500 is an internal server error. The server has errored internally. This may or may not be because it hates you, but it's almost certainly your fault.

Guru! Why don't you get a bigger living room? One with a drum kit, and someone to play it.

Every good band grows organically.

BG, what are your thoughts on ending a sentence with a preposition?
Is it possible to overuse the indefinite article?

It is the kind of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put.

For what did you ask this question?

We are each a member of this community; we are each a moderator. This means we both know that this is a community that aims to provide some useful advice and tips. It is a kind of advice that is of some use, and there are some good tips offered on a regular basis to any who wish to consider them.

As an answer to a question you asked above, no, it's not possible to have an overuse of indefinite articles. There are some who would disagree, but anyone who thinks about a subject such as this should have some idea of whether they should continue with any disagreement.

genuinegirly 07-23-2011 01:06 PM

I have recently been helping my friends by editing their scientific writing. These are international students from English-speaking India. I have noticed some interesting trends, including the absence of articles (definite or indefinite), overuse of commas, odd decisions with phrasing, and a complete lack of regard for ending thoughts with prepositions. I thought that perhaps my understanding was old-fashioned or American-English biased. It is good to know a true editor's thoughts on these pressing issues.

I have a question that no one has been able to answer for years Great Baraka:
What are the words to "Louie Louie"?

Hotmnkyluv 07-24-2011 05:00 PM

CHORUS:

Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go

Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

CHORUS

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.

CHORUS

Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

GUITAR SOLO

See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again

CHORUS

Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!
