Refrigerator--Repair or Replace
 

I would like some thoughts on this please. Our current refrigerator is a Maytag and is 10 years old. It still works great, but the it has a small leak that is ruining our hardwood floors. It needs to be repaired or replaced.

The service person today said it needs a new defroster thermostate which will cost $342.00 to fix. Or for about $1200.00 I can go ahead and buy a brand new refrigerator. This new refrigerator would be stainless steel to match the dishwasher we already had to replace.

I am leaning to just buy the new one. I just don't know how much longer the current one will last, although the one in my moms house is over 20 years old and still works great.

Also, the ice maker works intermentitly. This I could live with, but not the leak.

I would appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions.

Damn. If you are handy, you can likely fix this yourself for less than $100.

Not only can one usually find the parts they need for nearly any model, there is usually a good enough parts breakdown diagram to finger out how to DIY.

First off they don’t make them like they use to if you get 20 years out of stuff today your really doing good. Personally I Think its all a in marketing ploy these days some one figured out if you make them only last 10 years you will get a new one not like the ones that use to last 20 years or more, there is no profit in that .



I would lean towards a new one any way they seem to be more efficient and will save you money in the long run .

It's a Maytag. That thing should last you another 15 years, at LEAST, if you take care of it.

Get it repaired or fix it yourself.

Get a new one that is more energy efficient.

IMO a refrigerator 10 years old is running on overtime. I would replace it and purchase the longest extended warranty they offer. On a similar subject you can purchase a used old working freezer and it may last longer than a new model. Providing you know an old school refrigeration guy. The old ones are repairable where the new models are pretty much disposable.

I would say get a new one just because they use a lot less power.
