stainless steel scratches

OK, so here is the situation. Hopefully someone up here has a miracle!

My girlfriends mother was recently upset to find her favorite Williams-Sonoma Saute Pan had a scratch on it. This saute pan is stainless steel, non-stick, and costs about 185 dollars.

Turns out my girlfriends friend scratched it all up last week while cooking with it.

Now, her mother wants her to either fix it or replace it. So I am asking. Is there any way to remove scratches from stainless steel / non-stick pans?

Thanks for any help TFPer's

If the scratch is in the steel part it may be possible to buff it out with metal polish or a very VERY fine abbraisive (but test it on something else first to get the hang of it).

If the steel has the brushed look and the scratch is not deep into the metal I'd use a glass fibre brush to remove it - I've done that succesfully on watch casings before, but it take practice and slow SLOW work.

If the scratch is in a non stick coating then there is no solution that I know of and you'd better get your GF to start saving $185...

call williams sonoma. they may be able to tell you how to repair it, even if its to the teflon surface. it may be possible to send it back to the original manufacturer as well; don't rely on the first person who tells you they don't "do that." i'd call the 800 number and ask for customer support or something.
