How to download and save videos?

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone knows how I can save a video from youtube (and any other video from any site) and download it to my comp for offline viewing? I have been trying to save many videos from there but do not know how.
sometimes I find classics I cannot find anywhere else nad would like to save in my comp.
Any help is kindly appreciated. Thanks.

grabyoutubes.com is what I use.

works for a lot of other YouTube like sites too. The only downside is that it downloads the flash file, which you then have to recode. I suggest the Riva encoder.

If you use firefox check this out: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006

Really easy to use, although you only get the flv file.

Like the annoyingly large text says: quick, easy, free, and it converts it to AVI for you.

Easier way

All you have to do with Firefox is:

a) watch the video
b) go to your browser cache using the file browser (view in details mode)
c) sort by file size or date, then look for a big file with recent date/time stamp
d) rename the file with .flv extension
e) play with flv player such as Wimpy

your browser cache is usually somewhere like this (some of the directories are hidden):

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\sler95h8.default\Cache

You can watch the FLV files with VLC player, too!

www.videolan.org

Also, in Firefox just get the "Ook? Video Ook" addon (strange name i know), it just does all the hard work for you.

You just have to click the icon in the corner, specify the download folder and it just starts downloading.

that's awesome... a bit steeply priced at $4.99/mo, but I can wait 10 minutes between convesions. I'm going to have music videos on my ipod now :)
