Question about phrase
I didn't put this in sexuality b/c A: It's not about my relationship with someone. B: It's about the meaning of the phrase itself.
So, my question is this: Say; Person A says that Person B is way out of Person C's league. Does that mean Person C is too good for Person B or is it the other way around? Thanks |
"She's out of your league" means that she's too good for you.

If you think of leagues like sexual swimming pools, where only those in the league are allowed to jump in;
C is out of your league. (They're in different pool than you, and you're not allowed in). and You are out of C's league (They're in a different pool than you, and you're not allowed in). They're interchangeable, and both are derogatory. As far as I'm concerned, leagues are a contrived concept with no basis in reality. People like each other as people, not because they exist in certain "leagues." |
I ask about this because a friend once told me that I out of a girl's league. It's been months since then, I look at her from a objective point of view, I couldn't really tell if I was the one who was too good for her or if it was the other way around.

sometimes it's a matter of societal class...
someone who is from a high class family is out of the league of someone in a middle class family. hence the pauper and the princess fairy tale movies.... |
Usually it means that the person of interest is "better" than the admirer.
But because of the language it can be interpreted both ways. You can be out of someone's league in either direction. A league in this case referring to social status. |
"She's out of your league" means she's too good for you. Think of it as a club with tiered membership. You can't have access to anything above your level, but do have access to anything below it. So if she's out of your league, she's too good for you to be dating or pursuing her, but she can always come down if she's so inclined.
In practical terms, it means that she's unlikely to take an interest in you and you're unlikely to fit into her world. It's not always an accurate statement, though, but not setting your standards unreasonably high, especially when it comes to physical attractiveness, isn't a bad idea. Then again, I married so far above myself that sometimes I get vertigo if I look down. |
If your friend told you that the girl were interested in was out of your league he's saying, you don't have a chance, cause she's too good. Not sure how a good a friend that would be though, had you tried and gotten knocked down chances are you wouldn't still be dwelling on it, but by encouraging you not to try, you're still wondering.

Back to the original question: "Person A says that Person B is way out of Person C's league" That means that Person B is virtually unattainable to Person C, who exists in a higher stratosphere than Person B. Person A is probably just trying to avoid Person C, a likely friend, from emotionally/physically sacrificing themselves for the practically unattainable. |
