removing grass

is there anything i can do with household stuff to kill off grass?? it doesn't have to be removed, i just want it to get all brown and die

i seen some non-selective herbacides to kill everything but they were a bit costly... i just want to bare crap land

and for use, i'm talking about riding a gravel trail of grass and an area with light lawn grass... i dont care how i do it or how it's done, i just want to do it quick and cheap.... the area isn't for show anyway... sooo its no problem if theres some dead brown left

.... will dumping rock salt on this do it? or what should i do?

I think about the only thing you can do is purchase the normal "kill all vegitation" product. If you kill the grass, weeds will take its place. However, if you plan to put gravel or something on top of it, cover the area with plastic. It will kill the grass and then you can pull it or dig it up. But again, weeds will end up growing there where it's not toally covered. That's just nature.

Rock salt in enough concentration would kill off all the vegetation underneath it once it got wet. It would also leach into the soil and keep things from growing there for a number of years. You have to be very careful using it to make sure that it doesn't leach into the nearby soil or into any waterways. If you want my opinion, don't be cheap and buy some of the commercial-grade herbicide and use a moderate amount. If anything comes back, use it again. It's strong stuff, so you don't need much of it, but it should take care of anything you have. I'm using some of it under my deck, which is all gravel.

Why would you do that?

Anyways... covering it with black plastic sheeting for a while would kill it.

Putting out salt will probably hurt the health of the grass, which will encourage weeds to grow, especially the hardy weeds.

Go with covering it with dark plastic. It'll kill it dead.

Use Round-Up, kills everything, just don't spray it that close to the stuff you want to keep. It's an equal opportunity killer.

Along the side of our Paved driveway we have a gravel edging before the grass hits.. Weeds like to poke through this gravel from time to time and after years of digging em out we have gone with rock salt..

the weeds die.. and the lawn not more then a few inches away doesn't suffer (gravel's main purpose was for water drainage after all)

IMO your only worry is tree roots. living in canada i've seen what salt can do to a tree that was planted too close to the road.

as for the salt harming stuff.. the government dumps literally thousands of tonnes of it every winter on our highways.. a few studies have been done.. nothing conclusive .. at least that i've read. but in the concentration you're talking about it won't hurt anything.. cept for the aforementioned wandering slugs. heh

Where do you live? Is not watering it an option? Otherwise, black plastic is the best way to go, imho.
