Using an existing garage door keypad with new unit?
 

So I've recently installed a new garage opener after my old one fried itself and began smoking, and now that everything works, I'm curious to know if I can use the old wireless keypad unit to control the new opener instead of using the one provided? If any garage door experts frequent the forums I'd be interested to hear about this. My guess is no though since it wont be the right frequency or what not but you can never be sure right?

The answer is a definite maybe. Manufacturers have evolutions of keypads, aftermarket manufacturers keypads have limited application, and so forth. Start with the door operator-write down all data from the head unit and then perform an online search or contact a door service company (who will perform the search work for a fee).

There should be some instructions with one unit or the other. I know you can usually "train" a key pad using one of the buttons on the door opener. There really should be instructions in the opener. If not, try looking inside the package or a replacement keypad for the instructions or get the instructions on line for a keypad that is in the stores.

I found in the back of the door manual that it wont work with off brand openers. Bleh thanks anyways guys.

New keypads are pretty inexpensive. 10 bucks or so...?
