Rug Cleaning
 

I have this rug from Ikea.

Its the RISTOFT one, if for some reason that brings you to a different rug.
Anyways, some drinks were spilled on it, that made it look like someone pissed on it. I tried to just use carpet spot remover on the rug, but that made the piss stains even worse! (bigger)
What can I do to get this rug clean?
Or is is just cheap ikea garbage and I should just throw it out?
I know it is just a $30 rug, but buying a new one really isnt an option, as I am a college student.

Know anyone who's moving & needs to clean their carpets? Suggest an extraction cleaner & go dutch. The grocery store models aren't great but it's better than can cleaner.

Do you have access to a wet/dry shop vac? Mix HOT water with just enough laundry detergent to get suds. (Test colorfastness of a hidden area.) Use a rinsed-out spray bottle. Spray a small area, scrub lightly with a knuckle brush and draw it out with just the vacuum hose. Let sit while you do another section, go back to the first, repeat, etc. Use plain water the last time. Lots of words for a simple procedure but you get the idea. This may set stains that don't come out but it'll still look much better.

Spill more drinks on it, in a symetrical pattern, for a mottled look. :thumbsup:

Barring that bit of brilliance, on my part...what type of drink was spilled on it?

ahh no access to wet/dry vac.
also to rent an actual carpet cleaner would cost me more than the rug.
haha, i thought about just spilling drinks all over the whole rug to get it all one color, except as I mentioned the color is an ugly pee color.
for anyones info it was a redbull w/ a lil bit of jagermeister mixed in. :)

First of all...Bleech...

Secondly...you may be screwed. I highly doubt that the carpet fibers were treated with any type of stain resistance, given that it's a $30.00 carpet. Therefore if the fibers soaked up the stain...it's there to stay. They're pretty much meant to be used, abused, and tossed in a dumpster.

And finally...Bleech...again.

I like the camo-stain idea. That'd save on cleaners.

Do you have a driveway and a hose?

Temp, your rug is cotton and jute with a latex backing. The yellowish color is likely due to lignen found in raw cottons and color loss. Bleach would not be a good idea on cotton, but at $30, what do you have to lose?

Cyrnel has a good starting point. Hose the rug down, especially rinsing out your spotting treatment and let it dry to see what you have left.

Ive thought about taking it to a car wash and hosing the sucker down.
should I go w/ straight water? or add some of their soap that they spray out too?

That'd work if the bay is clean. They often have grease/mud/whatever all over and I'd worry about it wicking up into the rug.

Car wash soap should be pretty inert... wetting agents & pretty bubbles. Shouldn't have bleach or other whiteners like fabric soaps often do. Pen?

yeah, I was thinking I could hang it on the wall (where you hang florrmats)

mix a little dish soap and hydrogen peroxide in water. That combo is amazing.

Dish soap is too alkaline for cotton. I recommend a diluted hair shampoo (one dollup to a quart), after a very good rinsing, followed by another thorough rinsing.

Sorta like what is says on the back of the bottle. :D

I didn't think about the cotton thing...I use my concoction on regular carpet.

the cotton edge isnt stained, just the middle "jute" stuff.
I moved the rug so it is just sitting in the corner right now, the stains arent as noticeable as I originally thought now.
but I would still like to get it cleaned. I think im going to do the carwash idea.

Dish soap is too alkaline for any carpet fiber and usually leaves a sticky residue. Give my concoction a try and I think you will get better results. :)

Well, colour me impressed! I spilled orange juice on my carpet last night, and just made a smaller batch of the shampoo mix (little bit into a empty sour cream container full of hot water). Worked like a charm!
